I'm 35 now and I can't squat or pull like I used to. My bench is still at its natural peak of 135ish raw, but I used to be able to pull over 200kg all the time. Now i'm unable to pull 200kg even though i'm deadlifting regularly and my squat is 165kg. Down about 30kg on squats and 30kg on deads. Am I just old or something? I used to pull 200kg plus about 2 years ago. Da heck is going on?

I think fear of injuries is the main cause.

When you are young and haven't had many injuries you are prepared to push harder with bad technique

I peaked in my mid/late 30s.

Of course things decline with age. I think it's the ability to handle and recover from heavy training that goes. I've adapted my training to suit my age (44) and injuries.

I don't think so I am also 35 and feel as strong if not as strong if I have ever been but planning on setting new PBs next year. I squatted my all-time PB in February of this year.

at 40 the difference for me now is that I have to be selective on the lifts that I want to focus on. I used to be able to peak on all my lifts at once but, after many critical breakdowns, I realised that I can only really peak on one or two lifts at a time now. im currently just treading water at 80-90% of max on everything except for one upper body and one lower body lift. have been feeling much less likely to snap my s**t up with this approach - touch wood.

Fear of injury was big for me as I approached 40. I decided to have a complete change and try calisthenics and I'm hitting PBs at 42 in things like weighted dips and handstand press ups, but I bet squats and deadlifts would be on the decline if I was still lifting heavy. I do miss lifting and might do a bit in the future, but the fun went once I started thinking too much about injuries when deadlifting.

I’m 37 and I feel I’m the strongest I’ve ever been. I’ve hit deadlift, squat and bench PB’s this year and even random s**t like circus dumbbell PB’s.

I’ve had a s**t tonne of injuries but I still have no fear, which helps.

All I can say is, I train a hell of a lot smarter now. I rarely do 1rm attempts (actually I don’t do fewer than 5 reps really), and I do a teeny, tiny amount of mobility versus none when I was a wee nipper.

I don’t know when the age-related strength decline happens, but I plan to keep it at bay as long as possible.

I hit pbs in all my lifts in February pre lockdown aged 36

I have lost over 2 stone, so obviously I am not strong now, as I'm focusing on cardio and body composition

I had noticed recovery going downhill about a year or so ago

Once I get to good shape, im going to train naturally for a little longer and get as close to previous numbers as possible (maybe surpass?), then I'm going to take some gear

I was going to juice early this year, but wanted to get in some shape naturally first

Some will see it as cheating, but I'm not competing drug free and I will be stronger than ever with more muscle these next few years

Roll on the good times!!

I was at my strongest about 10 years ago, so 35/36. But that also coincided with me having a desk job instead of being a postman, and being 100kgs instead of 85kgs, and not having a knackered ankle.
It’s mainly my ankle holding me back, if it wasn’t for that I reckon I could be close to my max strength, but at 15 Kg lighter.
Max lifts at 35: 190/145/240 not in a Comp so not a paused bench.

Best comp lifts in my 40s at under 83kg:
175/125/225

At 35 it would be unusual to see a decline in strength due to age. Cumulative injuries could do it and you're likely to have to be a bit more sensible and careful with your training at that age but if you haven't had loads of injuries you should be really hitting your peak at this age

I’m nearly 50 and after the worst year of my life I’m now at the weakest I can recall being in a very long time.

In early 2019 I had a 200kg bench and 140kg log, 230kg squat and my usual s**t deadlift around 230kg. Then I destroyed my track day car in a huge crash at the Nurburgring in October ‘19, rolling it 5.5 times, lost my job 2 weeks after that so I had a few months off. When I was ready to train again the whole COVID stuff started and f**ked my industry and closed the gyms. Then my mum died. So I’ve done nothing much for a year except sit around feeling sorry for myself. I was able to rep 160kg for 6 reps bench after a few weeks easing myself back in but now I’m in calorie deficit to to improve my composition and I must be doing it wrong as I feel as weak as a kitten only repping 140kg last week. This seems harder than years ago as I could drop calories and body weight without losing much strength, plus strength is talking a long time to return.

I might just have to turn into a Crossfitter as I’m too old for strongman and not pretty enough to be a bodybuilder. Unhappy

Yaman, I’d be surprised if you’re experiencing age-related decline yet, although I suppose it’s possible. Having said that, I can’t remember what back/ knee(?) injuries you’ve had in the past, but I guess that could influence dead’s as well as squat.

I gave myself a minor back scuppering (1 slightly bulged disc - “consistent with age” I was told) which has made squatting difficult, although box squatting is OK. Am sure I could still get stronger than I was before on deads, but wouldn’t feel comfortable due to back as poundages past a certain level.

How about your body weight? Are you as heavy as you were when you did those numbers before?

I’m currently getting more satisfaction from almost having visible abs at 40, than I did from being slightly stronger than a regular gym goer in my early 30s.
