This has to be the default position. Any economic application of the precautionary principle so beloved of the pro lockdowners should start from the assumption this is true. The only coherent arguments against this are from MMT types who have basically no empirical evidence to offer (for their grander claims), just appealing-sounding theory.

I agree. The total inability of Thatcher/Regan UK//USA economics to manage in any sort of crisis shows it has stretched your government systems to breaking. Any wobble and the wheels fall off. Every crisis response since 80s is sell off or defund everything and underinvestment. Now the hospitals don’t have basics and you have to borrow to pay. There is no plan to re-invest. The capital reserves you’d expect a G8 country to have have been privatised to debt repayments and contracts to cronies. Depressing. Countries like Germany/ Canada seem to be dealing with this a lot better where people aren’t in debt up to their eyes and necessary services are funded. They have a few belt notches to pull in in a crisis. PRC type system managed this wonderfully too in fairness. 15% private sector the way to go? Why is national road building, trains, hospitals etc not Public Sector. Get rid of the middlemen.

The economic model the UK seems to be following is that in order for everything to run at its most efficient, every hospital bed, every seat on every train, must be full at all times, or it is cut. So we have no extra capacity. This country has no extra capacity, the only way to extra capacity is capital investment, paid for through tax rises, something right wing politicians and media have characterised as evil for decades

Hopefully 2021 will be a return to normality. I see that Britain's exit from the UK has enabled quicker vaccine development and approval than if it was still part of the EU. The EU have criticised the speed at which the UK are moving, hope it doesn't backfire for Boris and chums.
