Is he younger than Sigmarsson was? I know they were both 24 but wondering if anyone had worked out months/days...

His name will have just exploded in the strength world. I had a look at his Instagram following just before he won and it was at 44.8k. Already at 46.3k after an hour.

I just read that Tom dropped the Anvil in the Medley, could have been another win, certainly a couple of extra points.

He was not. I'm not sure exactly when the 1984 contest was held but even if it was held 12/31/84, JPS would've still been a month younger than Novikov is today.

what a comp! thought it might be rubbish with everything going on but this has been one of the more enjoyable spreadsheet watches for a few years. def looking forward to seeing it at xmas.

supreme effort by tom. so good to see a brit on the podium and so close to the top spot too.

also a great showing from bish, proving his performance in the heats was an anomaly. luke too making the final on his first attempt.

and well done to super nova - had him picked for the top spot but didnt expect him to be that good. looking forward to seeing how he shapes up against kila and licis in the future.

I said:prediction:

1. Novikov
2. Shaw
3. Caron
4. TStolt

not bad. underestimated tom and jerry Grin and overestimated shaw.

I’m really happy for Caron.

I think we all overestimated Shaw and underestimated Jerry.

Amazing that Tom pulled back to 2nd after his awful Hercules Hold.

It is what I now call the Big Z effect!

Much like Z, we ALWAYS expect great things from these athletes, because they have been so dominant for so long. People are still saying Z can challenge at worlds, and have been saying for years that he's just been unlucky with injuries... The same has happened with Brian. Sadly this is not the case anymore.

Both these guys are veterans, who have been in the game a long time. Father time has caught up with them, and everyone is still in the romance mindset that they can still do it at the very top level because of their legendary status. Of course though, sometimes their is a fairytale story, much like Tiger Woods coming back and winning after so much has been and gone, but that is fairytale stuff that happens very rarely.

Brian and Z are legends, and that will never change, but new legends are born and old legends fade away. Brian is sadly done, along with Z. The dominance of these two is long gone.

Congrats to Novikov. What's his bodyweight? He doesn't look particularly big.

Yes he looked a lot smaller than Ed when Ed was interviewing him. Its good to see a smaller guy do well, great job holy roller Novikov Happy

I can't help wondering why WSM has so much prestige attached to it, given the amount of TV show bulls**t it involves(the story about re-doing the squat event a few pages back being one example). I guess its the title and the fact its running so long. It must be so irritating for the athletes. The Arnolds should defo be a more prestigious title.

I know Brian underperformed compared to what alot of us were expecting, but I think it's abit harsh to ship him off to retirement. He still qualified for the finals, just like everyone else.

Someones gotta come first and someone's gotta come last.

The issue is, if you are used to fighting for the title will Brian be content to show up when the best he can fight for is a spot in the finals?

If he is that's grand. I'll happily watch him just like i enjoy watching Z have fun even though he can't win.

I think Terry is a good example. There was time when he was a title contender but he knows those years are behind him. But he still comes with an aim to make it into the finals which given his performance this year looks to be a realistic if challenging goal. As a fan, I really like that attitude. But I can also understand wanting to go out at the top.

I think had Terry had made the final he would have given a better showing than the Latvian that pipped him through. Just a case of the events which, except log, were overall very good for Terry.

It's great to see him back as one of the world's best though.
