The price of a packet of twenty Bensons back then was 63p and the budget put them to 67p. As a 30 a day man that would have put me at just over a pound per day.

Camel break back straw as they almost never say.

Interestingly I enquired the price of the same cigarettes on my last visit to tesco and they are £12.55, which is as near as dammit 63p EACH

Who-ever would have thought that ?

15th May 1991 was my quitting day. Not that far off my thirtieth anniversary... Happy

Good man. Do you remember the price ?

My giving up was price driven so I remember that well, you may have had other motivations so you may not.

I can remember being in a pub one day, many years ago, they had a cigarette machine and an engineer was fiddling with it, probably some kind of coin adjustment, and as he left he mentioned that cigarettes would have to go to a pound a packet before he would have to come back to alter it again. I still vividly recall that the sense of utter disbeliefin the entire room was palpable.

They would NEVER get to that price. Never I say.

How wrong we were

End of first week of working from home and it is still as horrible as it ever was and it really won't get any better

Plus I am really sick of that medical officer guy who keeps popping up between programs to give us an update and one of the first things out of his mouth is "Anyone can give you the virus" Surely you actually have to have it first - you can't give things that you don't have. I would have been beaten half to death at school for such a basic mistake.

Google tells me £1.80 for 20, but I was a cheapskate who mostly smoked roll ups, so I was probably spending £10 a week on my habit. I remember cutting back on chocolate as well and saving £50 a month. Literally, as in putting it into a no fags account I opened up. But it was more for health reasons, and I had a young family then.

Thanks for that Martin, I was in a small convenience store this morning buying chicken soup and weetabix of all things and strangest of all a pack of Chorley cakes which strangely felt like a treat, which they really aren't. Odd things are happening to me, maybe it's the isolation, or maybe it's eating standing up. Yeah, the latter of those two seems the more likely.

I won't start to worry until you start putting the chicken soup on the weetabix.

Cheers Rick, I think that day is quite some way off.

I always appreciated the works canteen, and was always amazed that so few used it. You had a choice of three meals every day, there was soup as well to start with if required and a selection of puddings and custard if the need arose (and it often did). It would never have got a michelin star but it was good wholesome food, that someone else cooked and did the washing up. Plus it was subsidised. It was a rare day I spent more than £4 on my dinner. They would also make bespoke sandwiches for mid morning.(As well as sausage, bacon and egg barms) I used to go for any cold meat (I would let them choose) plus tomato and cucumber on brown bread, cost was £1.20 which was about half what Tesco would have charged. And yet several would turn their noses up at this and drive a mile to Tesco to pay double what the canteen charged and then drove a mile back. Nowt so queer as folk as the old saying goes.

I really miss it now.

British summer time. I hate that s**t and the sooner we scrap it the better, trouble is I don't think they ever will. All clocks altered - I may disapprove but I couldn't have a clock wrong. That just wouldn't be fair on the clock

This morning I watched "Once upon a time in Hollywood" and enjoyed it immensely. Not sure what is next, maybe a nap.

It the good old days (prior to last Wednesday) on arriving home from work I would occasionally find a message on my landline answerphone which was an automated voice stating that my credit card had been used in several countries for hundreds of pounds etc etc. There is also a button I can press where I can see who has phoned me while I was at work. It was a rare day when no one rang, I frequently saw withheld or unknown numbers, usually just one or two, the record for a single day is, if memory serves me correctly eleven. That was a one-off but three or four is not unusual.

Today is my fourth day of working from home and so far, the phone has not rung once.

Is it too much to hope that the scammers are all dead ?

You get no prizes for knowing Dick Dastardly's first name was Richard, but kudos to anyone who knew that his middle name was Milhous

April fool's day. A ridiculous notion if you ask me which I will have no truck with. Not the best of days today. The phone did ring and it was someone I wanted to hear from, the optician in fact. My glasses had arrived so I popped along and got them, they now sit on the front of my fat face as that really did seem the best place to put them.

Got a text or two from young Mack from the club which was pleasant. I have to admit that people are keeping in touch during this lockdown nonsense and it does help a great deal.

So, new glasses, and I managed to incorporate some shopping into the round trip. The shop I went to was near the post office, and they, it would seem are only letting one or two into the place at the same time, there were about twenty people queuing to get in there which with the two metre rule meant a very long queue. They must have been giving cash away as I can't remember the last time I same that many folk wanting to get in.

And so to finish -

I watched an episode of Australian masterchef, someone made a meringue and everyone cheered, which was odd, as Australians usually boo meringue.

Ho ho ho.

The famous one of Wacky Races, who went on to try to catch pigeons, had a sidekick named Muttley.

I can't think of another off the top of my head.
