This little lot took a surprising amount of time tonight, that is often the case when working free of deadlines, but when the good doctor pointed out that it had taken one hundred minutes I was very surprised.

There will be no training Wednesday as I will be filling myself with turkey at r kids and there will be no heroics Friday.

This year has not been great, I was slowly coming to the conclusion that I would never compete again but than something that DrRick said a couple of weeks back caused me to think again.

I will have to do some research first, but I have some decisions to make, since Dave C left is in September there have been no powerlifters of note at the club, I don't class myself as one of those. I didn't even class myself as one when I was any good so I sure as hell don't now I have turned to s**t.

That I will continue to train is a knocking bet, an end to training would be unthinkable, but whether it is a way of passing time or as a means to an end remains to be seen. It will probably rest on just how s**t I actually am and what, if anything can be done about it.

If you have a Phd in palindromes, does that make you Dr.Awkward ?

Your class was won last year with 240/102.5/220. Just as a reference point.

It will be four years in March since I last set set a British record. Interestingly one of which was the total = 600 which is almost 40 kilos more than the above,, it is all in the squat it would seem.

Hmmmmm !

Excellent Happy . One of my favourite bands (Soundgarden) released an EP or somesuch many years ago titled "Satan oscillate my metallic sonatas". I believe this is one of the longest palindromes in existence.

I have since remembered that my last competition, which is quite a bit more recent totalled 520 which is about 40 kilos below the above.

Hmmmm indeed.

An unusual Christmas yesterday as there was only the three of us for dinner but seven of us for tea, which rather threw the usual timings out.

For some reason I cannot fathom my sister-in-law decided to add cauliflower cheese into the mix for Christmas dinner. Regular gentle readers will probably recall that I regard cheese as rancid filth.

I also maintain a policy whereby if someone is kind enough to cook for me I will eat it all. So the first four mouthfuls were vile and the next half dozen or so tainted, but after that all was delicious.

I also maintained my now, usual Christmas tradition of driving the whole way around the M60 on Christmas morning, this was my first in a petrol car, which was fun, but I do prefer diesel.

A day on the couch today and back to training tomorrow, I suspect I will squat

Friday, 27th December, start 15:00

I don't usually squat on a Friday but I have to see where I am and where the injuries are.

Squat, boots and sleeves, no belt
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
20 x 5
60 x 5
80 x 3
100 x 2
110 x 1
120 x 1
130 x 1
140 x 1
150 x 1
160 x 1
170 x 1
140 x 1
140 x 1
140 x 1
100 x 3
100 x 3
100 x 3
100 x 3
100 x 3
The 170 was good depth but very laboured on the way up and it would have been foolish to attempt more. The 140 were easy but the back ached on the put down, the first one quite a lot and the second two rather less but that is never a good sign. The triples at 100 were all paused, the last three sets quite excessively paused. The achey hips ceased aching as soon as I sat in at the bottom but started again once up. Not the best day I have ever had.

I blame the cheese on Christmas day

I was alone for the first forty five minutes of this but just before four the place suddenly and quickly filled up with weightlifters, some actual and some wannabes but I was very glad to see them and things were slightly easier for their presence.

Monday, 30th December, start 15:15

Very sleepy boy this morning, didn't crawl from my pit until almost ten. So rather a short day.

Bench, very raw
20 x 15
20 x 15
20 x 15
50 x 5
60 x 4
70 x 3
80 x 2
90 x 1
95 x 1
100 x 1
105 x 1
110 x 1
115 x 1
120 x 1
125 x 1
The main difference between this and last week, when I topped out at 115 was that this week all three figure weights were handed off to me whereas last week they were not. So now you have it, for me a handoff is worth ten kilos.
The 120 would have failed in a comp as I raised my left heel but the 125 would have passed. It took a while though and it was clear that there was no more there today.

December 31st, day 365, tomorrow is January, day 1 of a new year, so far we are on safe ground.

Earlier, on the radio, the presenter referred to this as being the last year of the decade and tomorrow was the first year of the new.

His argument would appear to be that we have had 10 years of years where the third digit was a "1" and that tomorrow we enter a period of the third digit being a "2". The "twenties" if you will.

Now years were numbered retrospectively in the early 1700s, they picked the year when they thought that Christ was born and all before that were numbered backwards, 1, 2, 3, 4 BC etc and since then 1, 2, 3 AD etc. This means, and this is the important bit, was that all decades, centuries etc have to commence with a "1" and the end

"1" was therefore the start of the first decade and "10" the end of it, "11" therefore would have been the start of the second decade.

It therefore must surely follow that 2020 will be the last year of the old decade and 2021 the start of the new one. This also means of course that the millennium celebrations of 1999/2000 were all held a year early.

I begrudgingly realize that language is a living, growing thing that can change with usage. But surely maths is maths and we can't bugger about with that however much we would like to.

Your opinions are of value to me.
