Member 4923, 1795 posts | Interesting doc about the benefits of plant-based protein over animal-based... did you watch it and will it make any difference to the amount of meat you consume?

Member 4416, 1369 posts SQ 210, BP 175, DL 240625.0 kgs @ 122kgs UnEq | I have already been trialling a vegan approach. it has nothing to do with health, as I have had excellent health being a lifelong meatie. More to do with considering "can I get what I need without the animal?" As a steroid free gym goer, I know categorically that when covering my entire vitamin, mineral and amino acid profile, it still falls short. If I were sedentary, then I would remain vegan leaning (food, not lifestyle). However, the documentary is funny. The quotes /information given is part of the truth. Example: This is what Wilks says: And when it comes to gaining strength and muscle mass, research comparing plant and animal protein has shown that as long as the proper amount of aminos acids are consumed the source is irrelevant. ..... He quotes from this link which is where the study is published : https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15212753 It's only 15 lines long. But he doesn't quote the rest of it: vegetarians (particularly women) are at increased risk for non-anemic iron deficiency, which may limit endurance performance; and 4) as a group, vegetarians have lower mean muscle creatine concentrations than do omnivores, and this may affect supramaximal exercise performance —-—---------------- So. For athletes, well, it is up to you. I am of the mind that you should be able (or willing) to kill your own meat source, or else go without meat. It shouldn't be available on a conveyor belt. But, it is what it is.

Still got a little bit of strength Member 400, 22018 posts | Haven't seen it. My diet is heavily weighted towards plant matter. 2 guys I work with, who also train, are very carnivorous and say they couldn't function/train without a high meat intake. My strength level on largely "rabbit food" causes some bewilderment.

Member 4923, 1795 posts | Have those moving towards a plant-based diet noticed an increase in flatulence? I've been farting like an absolute trooper today, probably due to all the mixed beans I ate yesterday

The truth is, unless you are on keto - or El Vertical - chances are, much of what you eat is plant based. Bread, rice, pasta, potatoes. None of these things ever walked the earth. Vegetables. They're good for you. There, I said it. People should grow more of their own. My meat intake is way down, due to "her indoors" being indoctrinated since birth to actually fear meat. I'm still a sucker for a good burger. Me, I can't usually get them 'cause my girlfriend's a vegetarian, which pretty much makes me a vegetarian. I do love the taste of a good burger.

I eat a lot of meat Member 5124, 2996 posts SQ 245, BP 130, DL 275650.0 kgs @ 105kgs UnEq | I've already seen quite a few experts in the industry pick this apart for a various reasons, including bogus research, studies, claims and downright nonsense, along with lots of people saying it is bias and pushed by people with a vested interest etc etc. I do love how many people are saying that because Arnie is in it, it must be credible haha, because Arnie is such a legit source of truth. I've not seen it so I have no direct opinion of the documentary, but looking at the bigger picture, it's not hard to see that there needs to be some common sense applied. While many 'diets' out there rotate in fashion, and health recommendations, we all die in the end. At some point, most foods and food groups have been demonized as cancer causing foods, with everything killing us. The earth is heading for destruction, we all know that, and it does have a life expectancy well beyond all of us, but eating more plants is not going to change that.

This. Most people do not eat enough fruit and veg, and consume largely a diet full of processed rubbish. Most western people consume diets devoid of nutrition, and we only have to look at the large obesity rate to see poor nutrition, lack of activity and lack of education is behind it all. Eating more 'plants' for all of those people would certainly benefit them.

My asshole is not watertight. Member 2926, 6050 posts SQ 217.5, BP 107.5, DL 225550.0 kgs @ 86kgs UnEq | I've always been an avid meat eater, however, over the last couple of years I've started to reduce the meat based portions within my diet. Why? Well, I feel that I can easily supplement meat based proteins with carefully selected veg source combinations like rice/chickpeas beans/toast etc. Also, the actual carbon footprint of meat production is horrendous. Yes, I'll have beef now and again (I had the most delicious fillet steak on Saturday) but when the carbon footprint of chicken and pork is something like 1/5 of beef then I'll stick more with them but plants have a carbon footprint of about 1/10 that of chicken and pork and knowing that does make me aware of what I'm doing to the planet.

Yes we've evolved to need a series of nutrients that can only be provided by animal/animal derived products. I'm dubious about many famous 'vegan' athletes (patrik baboumain is one that springs to mind here) as much of their training and rise their current level, has been done on an Omni diet or they're banging that most vegan of supplements 'trenbolona' in their ass which pushes nutrient partitioning so far beyond natural levels that arguing what amino profile a protein source becomes somewhat moot.
