I'm in general agreement, but it's not always that black and white.

Isn't it ?

That is the point, the switch has two positions and two only, either pass or fail.

So whatever shade of grey you have, ultimately we have to either put it with the black stuff or with the white stuff. There is no option for the grey stuff. Everything gets classed as either black or white. Sometimes it is very easy to decide, and other times it is a desperate decision with the sucking of teeth, the stroking of beards and the scratching of heads. But decide you must. One or the other - no middle ground.

As you know, I put a post on the BP Facebook page about the appeal process when there is no jury operating. I can probably discuss things more openly here. The IPF rules give a right of appeal at international events, which is more difficult to apply at 'smaller' events where there is no jury. You can appeal against a decision made about your lifter, or a favourable decision given to another lifter (for which you must pay a fee). The jury can also intervene without appeal if they believe there has been a clear and obvious mistake. The process locally is a lot less clear.

The reason for my appeal was that two refs failed a bench for a reason that is not listed as a reason for failure. (Marginal upward movement while the bar is being lowered.) Why two, you may ask? Well, because one side ref was a brand new referee, the other side ref was an IPF Cat 1. When she saw him reaching for a fail card before the lights were pressed, she hit her red light, and then showed the same colour fail card as he did.

When the head ref asked her why she had failed the lift, she didn't know. She said because the Cat 1 ref had.

So when you've got refs who don't know why they've failed a lift, you've got a problem. So much for the mantra, "If you're not sure, give the lifter the benefit of the doubt".

And so my lifter, who had trained his bo***cks off for three months, was denied a Scottish record by a referee who didn't know why she failed it, and another who didn't know the rules.

To add insult to injury, the refs changed their decision, the Speaker (who is also the Scottish Competition Secretary) refused to apply the refs' decision, and he was eventually backed by the powers that be in BP. So a ref who admitted that she was wrong, a change of decision that wasn't applied by someone who had no right not to apply it, and the Speaker, bizarrely, backed by BP. I hope that's grey enough for you...?

That is very grey indeed, the fates do appear to have to conspired against your lifter, but as with all grey items they get deemed either black or white.

From what I can see there and from what I heard discussed at the weekend, I would put the blame squarely at the speaker's door.

The cat 1 ref made a mistake and the newbie copied him, on being told of their mistake they changed their decision and then the speaker refused it allow that.

It isn't his call, it is the centre ref's. As soon as he says change it then it should damned well be changed. Had the speaker refused me then the competition would have stopped and would not have continued until he had. I know the speaker is preferred to have referee status - and he may have the qualifications but was not refereeing that day. He should have done as he was told in my view.

Plus you don't get many of those in a decade, and while one is too many, those with a brain will learn from it.

True. And, yes, if I had been the head ref I would have vacated my chair too. The thing that bemuses me is that the BP executive upheld 'the referees' original decision', ie backed the speakers overrule, when my appeal was referred 'upstairs'. That will baffle me forever. All I can think of is that they deemed the coach's (polite) approach to the head referee (who gave it a white light) inappropriate, which is why I asked the question I did on the BP Facebook page.

60 x 5
belt on

140 x 2
150 x 2
160 x 2

I wore tracky bottoms for the squats tonight, I wear them almost every week so there is nothing unusual in that. But tonight from 140 onwards I go a strange sensation in my right hip, sometimes worse than others, everything seemed a little awkward. Anyway, after the fourth set at 160 the penny finally dropped and it was nothing more than the wasteband of my bottoms disagreeing with the belt. I therefore dropped the waistband a touch, ensured the belt was clear of it and was rewarded with a blinding last set. Moral - never overlook the bleedin' obvious

Am I glad it's Friday, last weekend's reffing denied my any chance of a lie in and it has taken its toll. Very weary today and could have happily just dropped my head onto my keyboard at work and had a quick hour this afternoon. It didn't come to that but it would have been so easy. So just did as shown above, had a chat to the good Doctor and called it a day. Very quiet tonight as the weightlifters (and it is they who make the bulk of the noise) compete tomorrow and were therefore absent today.

If I am out of my bed before nine tomorrow then by the Lord Harry I will want to know why. Having said that it is not impossible that I will awake at seven bright eyed and bushy tailed. There is little justice in this world.

The grey is a bit clearer now!

Thanks for reffing at the weekend Pete, nice to see you again after a decade or so!

The pleasure was mine.

If ever there is a grey you are unclear about you only have to ask, the current referees are very approachable and generally very willing to help

Epic sleep last night didn't open my eyes till gone half eight and feel much better for it.

Went out for some breakfast and got a Sherlock Holmes fifty pence in my change. How good is that then ? Thought I might have to wait years for one of those to turn up.

I have been following the same bench routine as you, as stolen from your journal when you described it a few months ago. I don't have anything to add to this information, I just think its about time I told you.

Consider it a gift then rather than theft, and I hope you made a better fist of it than I did. I realize now that I underestimated just how bad I am at this and set the bar too high. Still I know know what I have to do

That makes unracking difficult leading to a less than ideal start position imo.
