I played golf yesterday and was wrecked by the end - physically and mentally. Still not getting my blood sugar levels right, I think the answer may be to take plenty sugar on board before I start and take a bottle of coke with me to top up. I took two bananas at the half way mark, and they just weren't enough. So I woke up this morning wondering if I'd be able to train. I gave it an extra hour before venturing to the garage. Supposedly band work today, but I've had to abort the last two band sessions because of forearm pain, so I had a plan B ready.

Bench
Bar for 10
40 for 8
60 for 6
Black band on (adds 55 to 80 kilos resistance)
Bar for 2 - forearm too sore, about to abort, decided to try a few singles
60 for 1
70 for 1
80 for 1
90 for 1
100 for 1 - delighted, been wanting that for a long time
60 for 5 x 3 sets

Reverse Curls
20 for 10 x 3 sets

Dumbbell Arm Curls
22.5s for 10 x 3 sets

Finish.

How can I do sets of 5 with 60 when I can't with 20? Your guess is as good as mine, must be something to do with warming up.

On the whole. delighted with today's session. To go from 'will I be able to train?' to hitting a pb is great.

I increased the dumbbell weight by 2.5 per dumbbell. It's amazing how much difference such a small increase makes. But that's where I am now - no backward steps. And plan B wasn't needed.

How do Martin. Noticed your blood sugar comment. Are you diabetic?

Back/Rear Delts Workout. First time I've managed a full back workout since I switched from five to three sessions a week, about three weeks ago. Did everything in reverse order today, didn't feel up to heavy rows to start so I used YTWLs as a warm up.

Band Work
YTWLs - 20 reps x 3 sets for each of the 5 movements
Waist Pulls 20 reps x 3 sets

Weights Work
Lateral Shoulder Raises - 7.5s for 20 x 3 sets
Facepulls - 30 for 20 x 3 sets
Lat Pulldowns - 60 for 10 x 5 sets (might have been 6 sets, but at least five)
Seated Rows
75 for 10 x 7 sets
75 for 20 (because I could)
Finish

Pleased with that. The seated rows were two sets on each of the four grips. A short rest, then a dog walk, then a few holes of golf to finish the day.

Bench 8s day

Bench
Normal warm up to 100 for 2
120 for 1
140 for 1 - much harder than it should have been
120 for 7
117.5 for 7
115 for 8

Reverse Barbell Curls
20 for 10 x 5 sets

Dumbbell Arm Curls
22.5s for 10 x 3 sets

I'm a bit disappointed not to get 8 with 120, but 7 is a 120 comeback pb, and the 140 felt so heavy I was surprised to get that many. So some positives. We keep battling away, three more sessions before I head for Czechia.

Quick bite and a protein shake and then off to the hills to walk for a couple of hours.

A profoundly disappointing session today. Supposedly Bench 5s. First the numbers, then the excuses/reasons/mitigating factors.

Normal warm up without strapping to 80 for 4, then floss band on
100 for 2
110 for 2
120 for 2
130 for 2
140 for 1
127.5 for 3
125 for 2
Finish.

The weights felt excruciatingly heavy on the way up, so I feared for my 5s, and the fears proved well founded. Not sure if it was yesterday's golf, plus running a quiz afterwards, then watching the recorded football and not getting to bed until after 2? Or an hour in the dentist's chair this morning? Or that the garage felt like a greenhouse (the clear roof panels have that effect)? But I was tired when I started and wiped out when I finished.

It should have been 5s with 127.5, 125 and 122.5 today. I did all I could, but after only managing 2 with 125 I knew my race was run for the day. Resting for an hour, then I'll take the dogs out, and maybe do some arm work later if I get a burst of energy. If...

The only good news is that I still managed 140, and if I can do it feeling like this, what can I do on a good day?

Yesterday and today were chalk and cheese. I was still a little sluggish and creaky when I started, but that soon wore off, decent energy levels returned, and a decent session ensued. I think the lesson here (why am I still learning lessons at my age when I've been doing this so long?) is not to bench the day after golf if possible.

Seated Rows
75 for 10 x 7 sets
75 for 20
(2 sets with each grip)

Lat Pulldowns
60 for 10 x 5 sets

Facepulls
30 for 15 x 3 sets

Side Lateral Raises
7.5s for 20 x 3 sets

Then band work...

Waistpulls for 20 x 3 sets
YWTLs for 20 x 5 different movements x 3 sets each (15 sets).

Hard work, good session, having a bite to eat and a protein shake before walking the dogs.

Bench 3s today, supposedly. I spent yesterday holed up in the dark with a migraine, and had to train early because I have lots to do today, and I worried if I would be able to do anything. We can but try...

Bench
Usual warm up to 80 for 4
100 for 2
110 for 2
120 for 2
130 for 2
140 for 2 - comeback pb.
135 for 2
132.5 for 2
130 for 1
130 for 3

Reverse Curls
20 for 10 x 5 sets

Finish

Delighted to get a pb on a day when I nearly gave training a miss. Three with 137.5 (which should have been today's target) was never there after the 140, so I dropped to 135, which would have equalled my 3s pb. Got 2, failed the third close to lockout.

I did the whole session without the floss band, apart from the 130 for 3. The arm really hurt on the 130, so I stopped after 1, was tempted to leave it, but went back and got my 3. On the whole, real happy with what I did today, especially without the floss band. Life in the old dog yet...

Thick blue band bench. Last one before I head out to Pilsen for the European Championships

Warm up to 80 for 4 without the band
Thick blue band on (adds about 35-40)
40 for 5
60 for 4
80 for 3
100 for 2
110 for 1
120 - fail
120 - fail
100 for 3
Finish.

A bit disappointing, I really wanted the 120, but not today. First time, I unracked it, and almost locked it (managed to get the left side back into the rack). Cue the old argument that I did a complete rep, but just in the wrong order. But I'm not taking that. I felt my left trap really tight after my first set of 100 for 3 and decided to let discretion be the better part of valour. So not quite 120, but I couldn't have been any closer and not got it.

Now for a frantically busy afternoon and evening, and a very early ferry tomorrow morning.

Lots of good things about today.

Bar for 10
40 for 8
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
120 for 2
130 for 1
140 for 1
130 for 1
Finish.

No energy for reps but I got what I wanted. 12 days of not training, no supplements, tired, got a cold, and yet I still have 140 in me. Better than I could have hoped for.

Also the neck injury I picked up in my last session has just about cleared, and I was able to do the whole session without the floss band, thanks to treatment I got in Pilsen which may just have released the trapped nerve. Not counting any chickens though. I'll train again Thursday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, then doing the Scottish Masters on the 19th.

The goal is just to qualify for both British benches in 2020 (130 raw opener will qualify me for both) but picking up a new Scottish record would be nice too. I had higher goals, but I always come back from a commentary gig tired, weak and ill. I blame the air on planes - perfect germ sharing environment...

Still feeling rough and tired, but the competition is only ten days away so needs must.

Bench
Bar for 10
40 for 8
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
Singles to commands
110 for 1
120 for 1
130 for 1
135 for 1
130 for 1 (not to commands, was meant to be the first of three)
100 for 10

Dumbbell Arm Curls
20s for 10 x 3 sets

Finish.

Commands were really tough, being unwell doesn't help of course. One day, I'll get a good lead up to a comp, but this is just about qualifying. The great news was no need to wear a floss band again. Some pain, but not enough to need the band, so that's hugely positive. I also did the 100 with 81 cm grip with no shoulder pain. So some positives for sure.

Training on a Sunday morning, still fatigued, has to be done.

Bench
Normal warm up to 100 for 2
120 for 1
130 for 1
140 fail
100 for 9 - inside rings
100 for 10 - little finger grip
100 for 9 - third finger
100 for 9 - second finger
100 for 8 - index finger

Finish.

Not sure if strength is dropping off a cliff or I just trained at a bad time with a totally distracting training partner (there's no difference between powerlifting and weightlifting, shirts are cheating, wrist wraps are cheating, blabbers while I'm trying to psyche myself up for a set, you get the picture...)

Whatever, not looking good for next Sunday...

Edit - Went back to the garage and did my YTWLs. Was too knackered earlier. Vital to shoulder health. Might not sound like much, but it totalled 300 reps. Even more shattered now, but got the work in.

Is a bad training partner worse than no training partner?

For me, probably yes. I've got used to my own company and my own pace and get too easily distracted by s**te talk.

A very active day by my recent standards. Played golf at 1.00 (won my match) then benched about 6.45.

Bar for 10
40 for 8
60 for 6
80 for 4
100 for 2
120 for 1
130 for 1
Finish.

Arms, and specially elbows, were a bit sore after golf, and although 130 wasn't right on my limit I doubt if 140 was there. On more session, Thursday lunchtime, and that's me as ready for the comp as I can be. It's been an awful build up.

Then a ninety minute dog walk. Not bad for a man who couldn't walk more than 20 yards last Thursday. Now knackered and resting up.

The good news is that the lethargy seems to have gone. Felt much better today.
