It was a recent question in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Perhaps that's where you got it from?

I watched very little of the recent series, so I would doubt that.

Can you remember the value of the question ? That would be of interest as an indicator of how well known they thought it was

'Peg Boy'
A real thing or simply a nautical legend?

Legend. There is no doubt that it went on but it was punished by death. So it is safe to assume that they took it seriously and it was frowned upon.

I recall a documentary about the Navy in Nelson's day called "Rum, Sodomy and the lash" On that they had a transcript of a trial of two sailors who had been caught in the act. It was consensual but that didn't matter, the outrage was over the act itself. The poor buggers (no pun intended) were on trial for their lives and the entire transcript contained nothing but euphemisms. They were both hanged

Octothorpe was on QI. Ampersand is legit, though.

I seem to recall that there was an attempt for "amperseat" to be the name for @.

That didn't work and now it is confined to rare quiz questions

Friday, 22nd March, start 16:05

Traffic was hell tonight and as usual there was seemingly no explanation for it. But it seemed longer than it actually was as you can see from the start time.

Tbar row
20 x 10
20 x 10
30 x 10
40 x 10
50 x 10
60 x 10
70 x 10
80 x 10
80 x 10
80 x 10

Pulldown to chest, narrow grip
50 x 8
50 x 8
55 x 8
55 x 8
60 x 8
60 x 8
65 x 8
65 x 8
70 x 8
70 x 8
I remembered tonight that I had to forsake my beloved wide grip and use the narrow. I scoured the room for the narrow handle and could not find it, but I did discover a very narrow handle. With a tut and a sigh I attached it to the cable, stuffed my knees under the bar and pulled.

It wasn't easy but it wasn't horrible, in fact I could get to like these, much harder than wide, but really almost likeable. Happy days.

Tomorrow will be the ceremonial first tyre pressure checking and adjustment if necessary for the new car. It will also be washed as I will not have time Sunday to do this. Sunday morning I ref, and in the afternoon I get to watch a couple of club members go head to head in the 105 class. That, I am looking forward to. As no doubt are they.

Excellent.

Back in my quiz league days we asked the question "Who played saxophone on Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street"?

It turned out to be one of those very rare questions that no-one got. Plus everyone seemed surprised that they didn't know. When I read the answer it was largely greeted by silence as most had never heard of the man.

A quizzer off to my lest rose and asked "Did anyone get that?"
"No" I replied, "No-one did"
"See!" he cried and sat down
"Hold the phone" I said, "See what ? Explain yourself"
"Bloody daft question" he muttered, evidently not liking being challenged
"I disagree" I replied, "It wouldn't have been daft had you known it, so shut your rap and stop whining. In fact take something positive from this - you have learned something today, something that is evidently a little known fact. And I make you this promise" I continued "Remember that name, because we will ask that very same question again next season, I don't know where and I don't know when, but it will get asked again, and aren't you going to look a t**t if you don't get it then?"
"Hmmmph" was his only reply

Fast forward a year and the question was asked again, there were about twenty teams present who had been there the previous year and how many got it ?

None. Not a single one. Oh they all remembered me saying that I would do it and where we were when I said it, and they remembered it was an unusual name and that they had all meant to remember it, but not a one of them did.

I singled out the man who had argued the previous year and informed all there present that he was a t**t and that this was why. He countered that this made everyone a t**t but I corrected him, I told the bellyaching fool he had been informed that failure to remember would make him a t**t and that I would stand by that. I forgave all the others for forgetting but not him. "Hmmmph" was his only reply.

The following year, everyone got it correct.

It's not a link I would have made.

But once again I am astounded.

Away to the Wirral today as Jamie and Dave go head to head in the 105 class. Interesting to see who wins, Jamie has youth on his side, Dave however has experience.

Personally I just want to see nine good lifts from both, that is the best way to a bigger total.

Either way, I get to bollock either one or both of them in the coming weeksHappy Happy Happy Happy Happy Happy
