What was wrong with the deadlift?

Are they saying he didn't control it on the way down?

I thought it looked good, but I'm not a ref.

Downward motion. General concensus is that it was just a bad bad call by the refs.

I've watched it umpteen times now and there is nothing wrong with it in my learned.

What does happen as Tom locks the bar out, is that the ends of the bar whip slightly and do sink down ever so slightly as they settle, however there is no downward movement of the bar at the centre where the Man is gripping it.

It's a bad call from the side refs!

It looked bad to me. It's not like he actually dropped the bar.

Bittersweet for Tom.

He gets the 1000, but is robbed of a massive total that surpasses Dan Green's best at 110.

Based on that one angle I would NOT have called downward movement...I'd like to see the side angles though as both Refs obviously thought they saw it.

It was red lighted by one side ref and the centre.

I meant the two Refs who gave the Reds, not that they were the side Refs specifically.

Sorry for being unclear. Happy

Is it on any social media anywhere?.....scratch that, just found it on insta

EDIT: I see exactly where Macca is coming from in his analysis of the lift. Does this not happen a lot with deadlifts of this magnitude? Surely the refs must be aware that when a bar is loaded like this upon it stopping there's likely to be some downward movement at the ends? Confused

You've got me to watch it again... there's certainly a moment where something happens with the centre of the bar at just below the bottom of Martin's black suit legs...again though it didn't look like downward movement to me (from that angle).

The report I got from a (BPL ref) friend who was there was there were quite a lot of surprising passes and one mystifying fail (that one).

With the ease of those benches, it looks like he can beat it with room to spare... And bodyweight to spare too!

I don't know the man or his situation, but I do know that the territory between "too broken to compete seriously" and "to broken to live a normal, largely pain-free life" is well worth exploring. I live there, and hope to do so for the rest of my days.

Me too. If I hadn't got out the sport when I did I'd have been f**ked. However, I totalled 1000kg, and can still lift recreationally and enjoy the rest of my life. My only permanent injury is the knee blowout from my strongman days that will need a knee replacement one day!

Looking at this list does make me want to retake the top spot... just a little, but it won't be happening for reasons mentioned above.
