My gran turned 87 the other day and I still catch her shifting cookers, fridges etc in the kitchen. She's in the garden every day watering her aubergines, pumpkins, tomatoes, peppers, feed her chickens every day. Zero pesticides (lots of sheep manure), no alcohol, very little processed food, organic eggs, organic olive oil. Daily exercise. I'm 32 and she brings me a sandwich almost every morning, plus cooks dinner for me 5 nights a week. She does my washing. She was moving tables and sofas about today to do some dusting.

Red meat once every couple of weeks, and that's a modest amount of mince.

She receives 800 a month from her state pension, and national minimum wage is 2300 odd. She is expected to pay for her medication (one of her tablets is 260 a month, which I don't let her buy as I'm looking after that) as well as 150 electric, plus food and household bills. She can probably survive without me helping her out, and was doing fine before i got here. Moral of this story is probably that it doesn't HAVE to be expensive as you can grow most of your own food if you wish to live that way.

Having said that her mum died of cancer in her 50s, as did my maternal gran. Partly genetics I believe, but eating lots of fruit and veg with zero chemicals, olive oil, organic free range eggs etc. Is most likely not going to hurt.

I can't. I live in a flat. I have choices, but not everybody does.

The most generous estimates for non-high-tech self-sufficiency seem to come down to half an acre per person. I grew up in a home with a huge garden, easily four times anywhere else I've lived, but I've never lived anywhere with NEAR that ratio.

Mr Mike Ireatel might well have a point and I will look into his view but it is an opinion.

Most foods will offer nutritional value and yes everything will in the end kill you.

We have evolved in some ways for the better and others not so.

If you lived on cola and alcohol for hydration and processed chemical crap for food and smoked 50 cigarettes a day you will have a shorter life span and more ailments, the medical wards confirm this.

Our ancestors had a tougher life and the threat of predators but they had cleaner water but no combustion or preservatives.

Now in the 21st century the dangers are different.

Not eating any foods would kill you.

What do you reckon your life expectancy would be if you just ate crisps?

Saw a fussy eaters show before and all a woman had ate for decades was monster munch. She looked kind of fine in a healthy way...but she said her hair quality and skin quality wasnt great.

It is that point i realised that living creatures are great at survival with crap nutrition.

I was going to mention the Monster Munch woman!

I'm sure it's possible to live a long life on crisps alone.

I like all of those things (and have grown several of them on windowsills in the part, and will again) but they ain't gonna feed me Happy. Actual calories tend to need room and soil.
