I hear/read this quite often and never understand why, unless you think you have to eat top end steaks and salmon every day.

Here are healthy items I buy regular from probably one of the most expensive supermarkets

Broccoli head about 55p...375g
Bag of large carrots 1kg = 60p
4 or 6 bell peppers for £1...get this from a market stall
Bunch of bananas are about £1.50
Spinach about £1.20 for 260g
Tomatoes are cheap
Nuts are cheap

Oats and milk are ridiculously cheap from everywhere

Rice is really cheap

Eggs are really cheap

I can see how buying 'healthy' ready meals would make it expensive and takeaways.

Foreign people I know comment on how cheap fruit and veg are here compared to north america for example.

Thoughts and opinions please

If you're smart then no it's not.

Using certain discount supermarkets and taking advantage of their deals you can easily fill a basket full of healthy, nutritous food for a decent price.

I would say i can easily spend £200 a month on food. I take advantage of deals for vegetables and I buy bulk meat when it's on offer or short dated and i freeze it. I also buy certain thinga online like whole earth peanut butter as its cheaper.

Right now i have a freezer full of chicken thighs, breast and about 30+ burgers.
Thighs are cheaper yet full of flavour protein and fat. Breast is a little more costly so i take advantage of deal when available. The fresh burgers i got half price as they were short dates. So bought 30 and then took the time to portion up and then freeze.

Vegetables its best to get your staples and find ways to prolong their life and eliminate food wastage which is throwing money away. Veg i defo buy more on a weekly basis as and when i need.

I think the real issue with healthy eatings "cost" is that so many people have no f**king clue how to cook with what they have. I taught myself what works together, what flavours do well and i experiment often while keeping it healthy. Even if i finish at 10pm at night i still take the time to cook a meal from scratch. That only takes me half an hour as i've got to the stage now with cooking where i've mastered the bung it all in a pan method well 😅. Suits me well as its easy and does exactly what i want it to, be nutritious, tasty and filling.

Healthy eating once you master the basics is far more cost effective than eating unhealthy.

definitely don't think so at all--agree with everything in the response above and would also point out that once you are used to eating more wholesome, less "tasty" food (less sugar, etc.) it becomes very fulfilling and enjoyable. That may be where the confusion/issues arise--when people expect high quality food to taste the same as junk.

In terms of snacking grapes, mangoes or strawberries would set you back 2quid whereas a chocolate bar 50p or a massive sharing bag of crisps a quid.

A pizza you can get for a quid where if you cook a healthy meal you'd be looking at 4quid up really for the ingredients. People are lazy and would rather shove a pizza in the oven and its a cheaper outlay of expense so seems cheaper to many. They don't realise that 4 quid could get 4 meals or more

In terms of family meals its probably not much cheaper to make a healthy meal but as above comments say i think its laziness and lack of knowledge, also kids are fussy so its easier to put some chicken nuggets in and not argue with them over eating their veg.

fruit is ridiculous in price now.

i mainly let the kids have berries etc and I will have a cheap choc bar from Lidl if I feel the need for quick calories to try and cut back my outgoings. I so still have a lot og veg but it looks more like a 1970s meal. E.G. shepards pies made with lentils as meat is getting to expensive for my family.. Cant afford salom any more...so have eggs 3 times a week.

I agree that healthy food is available. However, I do have the knowledge but since this government imposed austerity on the majority of us, I have changed my diet to unhealthier albeit less quantity to balance out my weight. Even pasta has doubled in price the past 10 years. I have cheap myproten etc but really cant afford to spend money on healthy eating like I used to be able to. That's a fact.

I guess if the turkeys keep voting for christmas then it will be mums go to iceland ...

Shyte state this country.

If you have the knowledge, will and time to source and prepare from fresh then no, not particularly.

I do think there is a mindset that it's only healthy if it's expensive, however flawed that thinking may be.

I don't understand chicken breasts. I used to just buy 3 chickens for £10, then cut them into pieces. If you calculate the costs, you pay for the breasts and get the rest for free. Kinda like some girls.

Edit: In Cyprus the cost of things are a little out - chicken is about 25 lira for one, and people earn about 100 a day. I often get a pack of lentils or chickpeas for 5-10 lira and boil them up once I've fried onions and added salt, pepper, cumin, curry powder etc. Half a bag will give me about 100g protein and 250+ carbs, plus lots of fibre.

But when i buy those fruits i dont eat the entire punnet in one, i probably spread it over 5 days.

Don't really get why you think healthy meals are upwards of £4. I can easily feed myself healthily for a whole day for £4. I don't eat a lot...just 3 normal sized meals a day, lets say 2500 cals.

I buy meat in bulk. also frozen fish and veg a lot of the time. however, sometimes I treat myself to fresh fish.

Only really bring steak in now and then, to treat myself. Also I buy full fat mince beef and just drain some fat from it.

Cottage cheese is also awfully cheap, especially if not buying brand names.

Nuts are quite expensive, but you can find special offers.

Eating rubbish still works out cheaper, but you can eat clean on a budget, if you know what you are doing.

If you total up all the ingredients to make a healthy meal (meat veg carbs etc) its an outlay of about 4quid at least and like i said it can last a few meals

2500 calories - how much do you weigh? 180kg?

All jokes aside, eating healthily and in the 2-3000 calorie range is no issue for most people on less than a fiver a day - unless they believe eating healthily is a byword for avocado at every meal, and purchasing "superfood" juice drinks.

I cook five meals which are roughly
50g carbs, 25g protein and 10g fat each. The total cost is £1.70 or about 33p a meal. It has two portions of veg in It.

Eating healthy is cheap but a lot more effort. Family of four I spend £40-50 a week max and have meat in two meals each day and at least five a day of fruit and veg
