i'd been interested if he did anything else to deplete - seems like he went from pre comp weight to weigh in off one big sauna session. did he cut carbs? water load? etc.

I didn't see that.
I did watch however (and record) Owen Hubbards presentation during the 'Online Powerlifting Summit' this week which was excellent. He includes sauna/steam sessions amongst other protocols. He loses 4kg in the 5 days pre comp.

I watched it and if he did cut carbs in the lead up to the sauna session it was not particularly highlighted, since his fight weight was only around half a kilo more than it was before he started his sauna/bath regime

he competes at 82.5kg so that's 5% bw. a hefty cut for a 2-hour weigh in. does he glycogen deplete?

When he was competing at 83 I think his weight was not that much over that weight (as far as I could tell from his videos on facebook) His last comp he competed at 74 so that is probably why he he has adopted such extreme methods.

He does. Drops to 50g carbs per day from 5 days out.

does he not find it impossible to replenish glycogen in 2 hours?
i thought it took many hours to fully reload depleted glycogen stores.

He accepts the performance hit because he says that even though he is lighter and weaker, he is still more competitive in the lighter cat.

There's little knock on effect to single 1rm efforts.

Sure, if you're planning on playing a game of crossfit then you're going to be f**ked, but stringing 9 lifts together over a few hours is fine.

Even when I completely de-carbed (under 30g a day of carbs for 7 days), there is no noticeable hit on my maximal strength.

My personal best for a two hour weigh-in is 88.7 to 82.4kg Grin

that's a big cut with such a short restoration time, how did you perform on the day?
i've wondered if the likes of chris duffin, matt kroc who talk of 15kg+ cuts to make 100kg actually perform anywhere near they did at the peak of their training or just a smaller amount better than they would have had they hovered around 100kg for the entirety of their training cycle.

Helps when you have 24/48hr weigh ins and can take methylated teen et al. on comp time. Still cannot be 'fun'.

Does anyone know how much blood you can lose in the short term without messing yourself up? I've often wondered why they don't take a litre or so out just before the weigh in then pump it back in asap. I mean, these multimillion dollar fighters spending hours really going through the s**thouse to lose the last kilo or two, and they all have backstreet Don King approved doctors and such to hand now anyway, right?
