Lost his pen, then found his pen. #phew Member 4899, 2956 posts | It was definitely noticeable, especially in the early days of the meet...I think Branton's squat failure was just one of those things, as spotting 570-odd kilos is just hard. I think the past Classic Champs have been all been well spotted with teams of spotters that were a) very experienced powerlifters themselves and b) used to working together.

Member 2216, 2243 posts | That Kelly Branton one is a bit scary. 3 guys trying to curl a 400kg bar up to the racks wtf.

‘downsizing’ Member 5704, 3221 posts SQ 280, BP 210, DL 320810.0 kgs @ 96.3kgs UnEq | the way they're side spotting is retarded for 415kg. at the point when it became obvious he was completely stuck they should have helped him dump the bar, which is what i think the lifter has looking to do, not perform a 5 man WWE back breaker manouver to get the bar and man back onto the rack.

Aiming for a 250 squat by the end of 2012 Member 1989, 3168 posts SQ 240, BP 140, DL 270650.0 kgs @ 90kgs UnEq | That is shockingly bad spotting. The last one could have been very serious. However I am surprised that with the weights involved nowadays especially in the heavier weight categories they are still relying on human spotters. Surely they can come up with a better system. Actually this gives me an idea of a solution to the problem.

Chains/slings introduce the risk of trapping the arm against the bar/sling/chain I have never had any issues with spotting at any comp i've done im pleased to say. Getting a 50kg kid to spot a 600lb squat is never going to end well is it.

Member 4522, 1898 posts SQ 222.5, BP 152.5, DL 245620.0 kgs @ 120kgs UnEq | I think the guy who made the video is a prick. Spotters probably get paid nothing, agreed some spotting was not great but professional spotters aren't a guaranteed safety. s**t happens. You can't expect to walkout 415kg and things to not potentially go wrong. How can spotters collectively agree in a split second to let Kelly dump the bar.

Lost his pen, then found his pen. #phew Member 4899, 2956 posts | I think that is a good point on the last lift...dumping the bar on the spotters is generally pretty frowned upon in PL, although in case of an accident or injury of course s**t happens.

I think the problem is more to do with the organisers allowing spotters who clearly dont have the physical ability to catch the weight. I fell back with 300kg on my back at my first ever comp and the spotter behind me caught me and got me back in the racks. I feel for the spotters at that event.i really do I agree with the first point you made. they where likely paid in cups of tea and the video poster mugged them off.
