So at Rhino's Jim told me to go max legal on bench, and I did, and everybody commented how solid and comfortable it looked - and, indeed it felt really natural. Then the following Wednesday I went index-on-rings on the "good" bar in the Sugden and felt kind of weak. So, suspicions brewed, I brought a tape measure today.

As we knew, the fat bars are narrow - 73cm ring to ring (should be 81). For me that means if I put the first joint of my thumb on the rings, I end up about right.

The "good" bars, otoh, are actually wide. I measured them at 86cm. That means that max legal is actually, for me, pretty much ring finger on the ring - you could gamble on ring finger outside, middle finger inside, but it'd be risky. For someone with smaller hands, like LGB, max legal is probably pinky to rings.

So now we know.

seems like the motto "always assume the worst of sugden equipment" still holds true!

Thanks for taking time to do this, very useful mate!

Just as well I do powerlifting, otherwise all this maximum width and index fingers, pinkies and thumbs to the ring stuff would have me really worried. I hope you keep your fingernails short.Happy

I bench with my index finger on the rings. Im guessing tokar uses the same bars as me as we both train at total fitness's, does anyone know if these bars are set correctly??

The maximum grip did look so natural for you Rick, it would be interesting to see what progress you make if you stick to it. To be honest you looked better with every squat and bench you did on that day. Just a thought you could mark the sugden bars at 81cm with insulating tape or a car touch up pen to avoid grip width errors.

I suspect they're a touch wide.

As far as I am aware a proper oly lifting bars have power rings wider than bench comp legal. The Eliko bar at my uni has. For me 'ring' finger on ring is max legal. Most cheap bars I have seen have closer set rings.

Thanks mate, I really appreciate it Grin.

Of course now we know that the reason it looked natural is that it's only one finger wider than my usual grip - max legal is third finger to the rings on the Sugden bars, and my usual grip was fourth finger. I shall definitely stay max legal from now on.

It also means that the grip I was using for squats, after your instruction, will just about fit in the Sugden power rack. Which is a relief.

Yes, I think this is right. I have sometimes been surprised at the width of rings on an Ivanko power bar after training on an Eleiko OL bar.

Ring finger on rings for max legal, then, which at least is easy to remember Happy.
