I currently use a random, came-with-the-rack 2nd+ hand off ebay rack style bar, with hex bolts, smoothed knurl from the catchers and i swear one of the rings is off by 5mm. Seems to hold up ok though, reasonably straight etc.

I've been considering upgrading to a better bar, but is it worth it? Will a nice bar make me lift more (i'm doubting it, bar maybe dadlifts), or just give a bit of piece-of-mind it won't snap halfway through a squat? My other problem is that the mid-price bars are all rated up to around my current lifts, so when i'm stronger (fingers crossed) i'll be back into the danger zone. Or is that just manufacturers' protecting themselves, giving low ratings to be on the safe side?

Or should i just chuck a couple of clamps on a scaffold bar and stfu/get on with it?

I bought the strengthshop 2029 powerlifting bar! I'm not happy with it! The reason I bought it in the first place was because I kept having to tighten the hex screws every session!

2 weeks after buying the bar,one of the rings that fit between the bar and the sleeve popped out! Spoke to strength shop they told me to put some metal glue on it and hammer it back in! And that would sort the problem!

It didn't work and I now have to hammer it back in every deadlift session! How long until it snaps,I don't know. So I don't have tighten the hex screws anymore but I have to do a bit of hammering!

To be fair I haven't got back in touch with strengthshop, so I don't know for sure that they wouldn't replace/ fix it properly but I do feel that there was a fault with it from New and they should have taken it back and not asked me to repair it!

Also the rings are 10mm different from the centre point, which may seem like nit picking to some but a lot of my squats or lopsided slightly, a problem I've never sufferd before! Not saying that it is definitely down to the bar but it's in my head now and it bothers me.

Wolverson bars seem to be the way to go if you want a decent bar but to not spend too much. Happy

SS stuff isnt great, as above.

Sounds about right for strength shop stuff

From my experiences, most of their stuff is cheap made and poor quality

Got to love the customer service as well.

What is the crack with Strength Shop now then? Is Brian still running it or has he sold the company or something?

Surprised by the comments above they have always been a bit of a fan favourite.

I was going to order the STRENGTH SHOP ORIGINAL 2028 OLYMPIC BAR next week at £89.99.... but this thread puts me off, can anyone recommend a usable bar for under £100 then? I could just go for the ultra cheapo Ebay ones but the SS one is a small diameter (can't remember measurement) which is better for me than the usually thicker cheap bars.

Imo you need to be getting back onto Snapshop to sort you out. I've always found their customer service to be top notch, but on the flip side, the kit below the standard you'd expect. I'm sure they'd fix you up.

To the original question, definately invest in something decent. If you're short on dollar, I'd prefer to look out for something 2nd hand rather than buy an average bar new.

just like to update on my earlier post. since posting that I was unhappy with my strengthshop bar! I have received an e mail from strengthshop ( after them reading my post) basically offering to collect the bar from me and replace it or give me a credit note!

I bought a 1500lb rated bar from fitness superstore years ago and never had any problems with it. They're less than 100 quid!

Good to hear... do you know if Brian still runs it? I remember when Strength Shop was a cupboard at the back of Unit 20! Glad he has done well with it.

I ended up ordering a 60 quid cheap bar from Ebay. Couldn't justify a more expensive one as I bought Wolverson bumpers and some loose change weights too. Would be a bit selfish to spend any more on myself!
