Pretty much what I did. And definitely agree it's far from beneficial to training. After ten hours sat at desk the last thing you were ready for was training.

im the opposite, after 12hrs in a control room then training is ace! Goes some way to undo the bad posture lol and a chance to burn some calories and do something you enjoy. I enjoy my job, but not as much as squatting.

However i dont sit for 12hrs...i alternate with kneeling, standing and wandering around when possible.

I have more energy after 12hrs inside a control room than 12hrs doing a manual job.

A control room for what?

I believe that sitting all day hasn't done me any good

I definitely think changing position helps. Last winter (I only work at a desk for three months of the year now) I switched my chair for a balance ball and find I feel far better and freed her by the end of the day.

One thing I think a manual job does do it give you a much better grip. If I didn't go to the gym I wouldn't use my hands for much more than typing, consequently my grip is s**t. Had an 18 year old lad come in the other week, worked on a farm with his dad for years, picked up the inch dumbbell first time.

Yeah I know, Laine Snook runs my gym and he knows and thing or two about grip and the inch. Ridiculous feat.

I love my job too, but its killing my body. I look forward to training all day but then home and I'm so drained and broken, Ive already nearly talked myself out of training.
Sitting down is definitely not good for you.

JordanWebster said:I think that if you're new then it will definitely be an advantage and your initial lifts will be much higher. For example first time my brother ever squatted he did 120kg for reps.

I think at higher levels, then the soft of stimulus a manual job provides is not going to help you get any stronger. It might help you bench 100kg your first time in the gym, but it's not goings to help you bench 180kg. It's good for being 'quite strong' but not strong. I think as you become more and more advanced it becomes less beneficial and at best neutral. If you didn't eat enough and sleep enough to recover it would definitely become a detriment. Well those are my thoughts anyway.

Disclaimer: don't work a manual job so just hypothesising.

I do work a physical job and your absolutely spot on mate.
Definitely gives soma advantage to begin with but it can be a disadvantage too. Recovery from mild injury or even just recovery between work out days can be a problem. It's great for weight management tho. I eat like crazy and I'm getting bigger and stronger but haven't put on anything on the scales.
