Saturday 28/3 Midlands strongest man u90kg

Had very little prep time for any events for this show, but went with the aim of securing top 5 and making my second consecutive England's. Got there about an hour before and weighed in at 83.1kg fully clothed and keys etc in pockets. Was feeling a bit s**t and had a few poos before it started, and then event 1 was ready to go.

Event 1 - log for max

Never my best event, but had been going well before Arnold's. Then the two times I've trained it since then I have been blacking out at the top of every press and having to ditch the log. In the warm up, hey presto, every rep was going light headed and blacking out. Any way got on with it and hit 100kg, then 110kg and then blacked out with 115, was going up easy but then just lost it. Was good enough for 4th

110kg, 4th place

Event 2 - 18" axel deadlift for reps

In reality this was probably a bit higher, just high enough for me to get my legs say under it and just slide the bar up. Saw everyone else go, including Eric who got 16, then the next best was 11, so I aimed for 12. Got 12, with a little sit down in between (I fell over).

12 reps, 2nd place

Event 3 - 125kg Torpedo farmers x20m turn @10m

Worries for this after my debacle with the Arnold's farmers. Saw these and they were a very low pickup, but thin handles which suited me. Pickup felt ok and was moving quickly for the first 10. Composed myself at the turn as most people hadn't finished he course and I knew finishing would get good points. Just had 1 put down on the way back, but made it over the line in a decent time to just pip will to third place.

30 ish seconds iirc, 3rd place

Event 4 - 170kg axel squat for reps

Again got to see Eric go, and he blasted 16 reps out. Next best was 14 so thought just aim for that. Tried this once in training and only problem was cardio, so just paced myself. Hit 14 reps with 5 seconds to go, had 1 more in me but racked it as still had 2 events to go and didn't want to blow my legs completely. Wasn't hard, just lungs burning.

14 reps - 2nd place

Event 5 - press medley, 80kg sack, 105kg axel, 110 yoke, 65kg dumbell

Was worried for this as I know pressing isn't a strength and there were some big pressers at the show. Watched people go and to my surprise everyone was getting stuck on the yoke. Only will had pressed it but timed out on the bell. Knew a fast 3 would be good so just went quick. Had to have a second stab at the yoke but blasted it out and then pissed the dumbell and was the only person to finish, buzzing.

All 4 in 40ish seconds - 1st place

Event 6 - stones 90kg, 110kg, 120kg, 135kg, 145kg

Was clear in second at this point and couldn't be caught and was 3 behind Eric so realistically couldn't catch him, so just took it easy. Loaded 4 in 30 seconds then lapped the last one but just had nothing left to stand up with it.

4 stones in 30 seconds - 3rd place

Overall 2nd place

Happy. With. That. Didn't expect anything but managed to put in a performance. Happy days.

Great show run by Dave and ant as always and had a great day. Also happy for 2 good mates in WillSan and mike Neale to make the final. Roll on England's u80 and u90.

It was an absolute pleasure competing with you buddy. My mind checked out of the comp two weeks ago but the only reason I stayed in was I knew we'd have a giggle.

You blasted the a real solid workman like performance, just solid graft all the way thru, and consistency.

You were very deserving of second place, it just put a nice cap on all the work you put in for your arnolds performance.

I owe you £3 or £4 on our bet too, depending on the stones results. Someone told me I came second, but either way, you did me you bas***d

Hard work pays off, boys and girls !

(edit: Just seen Erics stone run, 4 in 20ish, so deffo not second, but just have to wait and see the score sheets to see how minted you are lmao)

Superb work flash !

I think 170 was too light for the squat event though

Thanks boarski, I agree, 170 was too light. But it allows more to compete as heavier would put people off. Think the event still panned out the same as it would had it been heavier.

To everyone else that has commenetdd, thanks. Also nice to have my squats complemented. I enjoy squatting and will try to squat a PB soon. I feel I have well over 212.5 in me

Nice work brother!

Grip on farmers has come on loads.

That deadlift event looked very "unorthodox" shall we say.

Well sir, a pleasure to have a comment, I hope your training for WSM is going well.

Farmers is hit and miss, thin handles, grip good, thicker handles, grip childlike

You coming to Leicester for Midlands 105? Train after? Or is it around time of the big one?

Hey, strongman is whoever thinks best. If I tried to deadlift it, I would of got about 2 reps. So I used my height, or lack of it, for a change which proved to be advantageous.
