He is rarely much over 125 anyway.

Scotbasher - forever Member 59, 2115 posts | Clives 440kg squat never looked in any doubt, infact it looked pretty easy. I agree he will do more than that weight soon but in the 125 category. He is without a doubt the worlds top squatter. If he could just keep hold of that deadlift!

Teabagger for hire Member 54, 237 posts | In the past Shane Hamman and kirk Karwoski have put up bigger numbers, but in my opinion the standards of judging have got stricter on squat depth since those days. The lifts I saw on TV and vid of the other two would not be passed nowadays. Personally I believe Clive to be not only the current best squatter in the world, but the best all time.

I am a total beginner and as of yet have never competed so I have no axe to grind against any particular fer just interested in peoples opinions.

Walk your talk Member 5, 25557 posts Administrator | I also think Clive is the best squatter - his wide but still classic stance , good depth and power out of the hole is all a girl could want from a squat. Bolton squats quite deep considering he would probably be passed if he went higher , but its hard not to acknowledge andy as a world class squatter , he patently is one strong MOFO, with a decent deadlift too !

Does f*ck all for SugdenBarbell.co.uk Member 1, 7173 posts SQ 182.5, BP 110, DL 205497.5 kgs @ 107kgs UnEq Administrator | Wasn't Shane Hamman's bodyweight miles over 125?, so even if Clive did squat 457.5 it would be the best squat of all time by virtue of bodyweight. An extra 2.5 kilos on 455 is around 0.5%! Surely too tempting not to go far. He should nail both records!

Teabagger for hire Member 54, 237 posts | Clive usually keeps his big attempts for the big competitions, and like most lifters of his standard he is thinking about the win above all else. BUT - if Clive gets passed with his first two squats, on a day when he is feeling good for it, I know that he believes he can an all time record. I would love to see it.

Shane Hamman weighed around 160 when he did 457.5 I think, but of course in the SHW category BW counts for nothing in records, even if it is crucial for places. I would certainly love to see a British lifter hit an all time squat record (a record that's stood for quite a few years now).

Jim, what do you think? im not sure where he's got room to put on many more kilos to be honest bud! I think he just thinks hes more competetive at 125 No, I agree but the question is whether he could make a 460 squat at all - at 41 there's not going to be a lot of improvement left but it is possible. And if he squat 460, he could do it at either 125 or 125+ - since he only needs to be 125.1 to make SHW - or both. The bottom line is this - the 125 record is 455 (Karwoski) and the SHW is 457.5 (Hamman). He's got to think that if he can beat Karwoski's mark he can beat Hamman's too.

Teabagger for hire Member 54, 237 posts | My feeling is that Clive does not need to improve in order to do a massive squat. What he needs is a really good day, when everything comes together. As to whether improvement is possible at 41 - I hope so. The guys I work with, who are involved in research in this area, tell me that you should be able to improve through your mid forties, maybe even to late forties. They claim that most people don't do this because they lose the hunger as they get older. I obviously have a vested interest in believing this.
