was going to say, there must be a reason behind all these high squats etc? is it more sport specific to just do partials for say cyclists? i'm sure their coaches aren't just slack and letting them away with it. must be planned.

But I thought if it wasn't powerlifter approved then it must be wrong?

No lift.

A good mate of mine is an Olympic sprinter. He never did full squats because that movement doesn't replicate the level of knee flexion or extension required for his sport. His trained 'specifically' at all times in every area. He only ever did quarter squats or box squats.

It obviously worked for him but people do get carried away with sport specific training, if it's using wieghts then it's probably not specific to your sport

I always enjoy the comments under Primoz Kozmus' clean and snatch vids

Ive said this for years. Weights are not specific. Quarter squats are quad dominant, quad dominant sprinters are only good for the first 20-30m. But so many get away with it.

I think talent rules a lot of these sports, not the programs.

I agree with all this, im no sprinting expert but surely it is hip dominant so hamstrings and glutes will get worked more with deep squats

What if said sprinter is doing other weight work for his hammies, glutes and hips, overloading them in similar motor patterns to how they use those muscles sprinting?

I actually agree with your point, but I see much high brow bulls**t from lifters that athletes 'are doing it wrong' or 'would be better if...' - It has about as much credibility as a non-strength athlete telling a lifter how best to lift.

I wonder how many of those sprinters are actually looking for the marginal gains in acceleration over top end speed? Perhaps that's already in place...

Makes me wonder what actually needs developing with the majority of sprinters to take them to the top level.

I was given Usain Bolts autobiography for Christmas, after reading it I would have to agree with you 100%.

Was it a good read...?

I get the impression Usain Bolt is lazy as f**k, which would give credit to the talent thing

I have nothing to add to the thread other than a friend of mine was a decent level high jumper for years and only ever did 'half' squats - his demonstration was more of a quarter squat though. He said it was because he only ever bends his legs that much so it was going down the sports specific route already mentioned. He did like to boast about his 'squat' numbers though even though his legs were ridiculously skinny (even compared to mine!)!

One other point annoys me about athletics training is that there are two athletics clubs nearby - one of them well-established for years - and neither of them have 'lifting' facilities available for power athletes i.e. no weightlifting platform. How are these people supposed to train for their sport properly? If you want to be a thrower, sprinter etc., you live in Bolton, and train at one of these clubs - are you not supposed to lift (with a coach) to help you in your preparation for your chosen sport?

Leverhulme s**te?

I agree. They re built that place when they should have spent the money on quality equipment.

It actually winds me up how nobody realises this.
