Football IS taken seriously; for virtually all other sports, mere lip-service is paid. If it wasn't for the national lottery funding various aspects of sport, this country would be a joke; which tells you how much sport means to the country. We offer no scholarship programmes (outside of private schools) associated with sporting prowess. Coaching and facilities are virtually non-existent. We have no teams visiting schools and assessing pupils on their athletic merits, in order to steer them towards sports they are likely to succeed in. So, to recap, athletes are under-funded, under-resourced, under-coached and under-rewarded. It's a wonder we can win anything at the Olympics.

Also it is the main route to the nfl I wouldn't call that amateur, they are being paid with a full scholarship plus what ever under the table that they do. And the gate money from 60k of people makes it a business for the schools too. So I get back to my point of once there is money involved it's a business and not a sport (maybe you could call it a job for the individual).
