Me not personally but two things to consider. Hopefully you don't have a bulging disc or anything thats one thing but the other is it veries for different ppl but there is a nerve that travels between to muscles glute and perifermis,I think its those and that can aggrivate the sciatic nerve,.that's a very simple layman's explanation but if you check it out you will see what I'm talking about.some are more genetically prone to it than others :-)

Hi mate, I suffer bad. I had to go to high bar squats and I rarely get it now. Mine's from piriformis, my nerve runs through the muscle instead of alongside it.

As said previous, it could be a herniated disc, which will fix but takes time. If it is the disc, you might be better lifting on a night as opposed to morning to lower the chance of it happening again (spine is longest and has more space in the morning).

High bar ATG squats really, really helped sort me out. I think it taught me how to use glutes properly, which reduces the stress on the piriformis, AND reduces the stress on it as the spine angle is much more vertical (which also is a solution for a slipped/herniated disc).

A lot of people recommend foam rolling etc etc, but that just made me worse. Foam rolling etc when you aren't suffering may prevent it, but while you're suffering I recommend not doing.

Also, I've ditched training with a belt, and I haven't had a problem since (touch wood). Maybe coincidence, but I genuinely believe my core strength has improved massively which has helped prevent further dramas.

Always worth going to the doctor if you suspect you have sciatica IMO

Had a few issues over the years. Suspected piriformis syndrome, prolapsed disc and then a hip issue (forgot the name) a few months back. All came down to progressive degeneration caused by frequency of training, bad form and just general bad luck. All went with time. Main improvement for me comes from 2 things:

Drop low bar squat and replace for high bar or front squat. My numbers dwindled but I'm not a powerlifter so it doesn't matter.

Drop deadlift for an extended while and do not train it frequently or regularly once back in a training program. I now deadlift once a month but squat 4 times per week. My numbers do not fall. When I do deadlift I always leave something in the tank, just a rep or couple of kg. Train powercleans , hang cleans, weighted hypers etc instead. Again, I'm now a powerlifter so numbers don't matter, gain more athletic performance from full squats, and explosive lifts then a heavy grinder deadlift anyway.

Careful with lean on overhead press. Try lighter but paused reps.

Forget the belt. Waste of time.

That's what helped, helps me.

I believe it ultimately comes down to personal trial and error and getting some good advice on your particular issue.
I've got to the age now where I have to put a lot more thought into what I'm doing. What I used to get away with, I no longer do. I had bad sciatica about 3 months ago, scared the s**t out of me, I'd had niggles from it before, but I lost the use of my left calf for about 3 weeks this time around and thought I'd royally f**ked myself up. As it turnd out, I was being a massive fanny, and with some sound advice from a good physio it sorted itself out. I'll try my best to manage it, it may well return, who knows, but f**k it... Grin

What is the situation with yourself ?

I injured myself 2 Januarys ago and it's completely changed how I have to train. As well as that I have to do daily physio to stop it coming back too sore.
Sciatica's a real b**ch!

High bar ATG squats have massively improved my body. No lower back pain, better muscle recruitment, probably helped my sex life and saved my marriage.

Foam roll hips as much as possible. Takes the some pressure off the lower back muscles which get all messed up through training and put more pressure on the nerve.

Experienced my first bit of sciatica these last few weeks. I was thinking mine is piraformis syndrome, but need to get it checked out now as I've had moments of Horrendous pain. Started to go away with stretching and massage but had it really bad today. I had alot of DOMS from attempting my first squat and deadlift workout yesterday and then had a long day teaching fitness classes. I reckon this has tightened up my hips which has made me have so many episodes today. I'm sure loads of people on here have had it at some point.
Anyone had it long term or have most sorted it within a few months? Anyone needed surgery?

Cheers.

I've got it and have had it for 3 years now following doing fat handle dumbell where I tore a muscle in my lower back.
For the first year and a half it was a nightmare until I found what I had to do to reduce the pain. I spent a half year rehabbing it and for the last year or so it's not been that bad in normal life though I have to be conscious of my posture etc.

Mine was caused by a tight piriformis, which was seemingly going into spasm and touching the nerve. Was extremely painful at one point, lost all use of my left calf.
Stretching the s**t out of it and a few visits to the physio to work on it seemed to sort it out.
Have no problem with sciatica itself at the minute.
