8/6/07

Deadlift- 200x3, 220x3, 230x3, 240x1, 180x10

Smith machine press- 8-15x4
Rear delt machine- 8-10x4
Cable lateral raises- 10x4
Dumbbell shrugs- 40x15x4
Barbell shrugs- 90x15, 120x15, 140x10

Well odd session but good (ish!). Trained with a bodybulder. We did a little pulling. Well he did one hard set lol! Then after I finished pulling I caught up with him to do 'Shoulders'.

The deadlifts would have made a great session but my grip on the right hand came unstuck. Felt it on the warm ups but thought nothing of it. I had gas left in the tank ater 230 but during that set I had to adjust my grip a bit and I wasted energy not pulling efficiently. Tried using straps to attempt 240 for a tripple but didn't feel good so stopped after a sloppy 1 rep! I don't want to blame my tools but, the best bar in the gym was broken and I was left with a s**t knurless one! Never mind. the 'silver lining' was that I had lots more horse power than my last pulling session and when I get it to the bar it'll all be good! 230x3 is a 3rm so there you go.

The bodybulding stuff was good fun but tireing. I had 2 mins rest after 180x10 before I craked on with the shoulder pressing. This was not enough and was breathing out me arse for the next 30 mins Tongue They were training with a fast BB pace which didn't help. Still manage to keep up with the 'bigger guys', just!

Anyway he's to a relaxing weekend with beer and wine on the horizon!

Bench Training

Floor press- 120x1, 130x1, 135x1, 140x1, 145x1, 150x1 (new pb), 155x0 (dam got greedy)
Bench press (pinky grip)- 100x5, 110x5, 120x4 (+1 x forced rep)
One arm dumbell row (off floor, tripod stance)- 50x5, 55x5, 60x5, 70x5
Plate loaded machine row- 8-12 x 4

Nice session back from the de-load week. New pb in floor press. It flew up and I got a bit greedy and went for another pb. Was too spent though and missed it needing a slight spot. Benching was nice after that just missing 120x5 with a dodgy 5th rep that was all over the place. Finshed with some good back work.

Good to be back training hard again! Next de-load I will keep doing some barbell lifts but at a low intensity and cut back on assistance work. Last couple of de-loads have been too boring Tongue

Dumbbell sumo deadlift- 20x20
Dumbbell conv. deadlift (heels together)- 20x20
Dumbbell RDL- 20x20
Leg extensions- 10x3
Grippers- RH IM*2 x3, x2, x1(+accentuated negative) (closed - 5mm off), HG250x1x2 (10sec hold); LH IM*1 x3, x3, x6, HG250x1 (negative).

Got the blood moving in the legs and lower back, job done. I also did some stretching and mobility work for my shoulders.

Gripper work coming along. Going to stick with the 3-2-1 on the no 2 trying to get more full closes over those 5 reps each week.

you equalled your bench PB on floor press - new PB surely up for grabs? I find floor presses miles harder than normal bench, what about you?

For some reason they are almost equal! Its only about 1-2" of a full ROM (like a 1 board press) for me. I also think I am just good pressing from a dead start (pausing at bottom of floor press no probs). During the normal press I have bicep trouble which sometimes effects the eccentric phase. Meaning I don't lower the bar as well as I need too. This results in being a bit hit or miss benching. It could also be that I am not geting enough leg drive in during the bench, but not sure of this. All in all I am more constant floor pressing than benching. I'd happily compete in a floor pressing comp than a bench comp Tongue

However on a good day I am normally 5kg better in my bench than floor press so you have a point!! I'll probably take a weight in 2 weeks time.

Iain is a floor press what it sounds like? Just lying on the floor? How do you do it? I'm guessing you need spotters to help you? Is the benefit from doing this that you get to rest on your elbows in the lowest part?

Sorry for the question in your journal but I am wondering what they are and how they benefit someone trying to raise their bench weight.

Yes pal I am doing unequipped's in sept. Off course are paths shall cross next month at BPC!

200x10 fair one, but try doing that at a comp! They only count the 1st rep remember Tongue

But I will take you up on that challenge! I'll need an oxygen tent after though!

Sorry Neil forgot you raised a question!

You pretty much hit the nail on the head regarding floor pressing. Its performed just like the bench press, lowering your upper arms to the floor, pause (but don't relax) and fire it up. A bit like a box squat for your upper body. I find it great for bulidng power and strength in the bench. If my floor press is good my bench will be. For most people probaly best of used as an asistance lift instead of pin presses. Taking a narrow grip is a good un for heavy tricep work too. It does however depend on range of motion too. As I mentiond above, for me it's pretty much a full ROM. If its not i think the transfer to straight benching (unequipped) is less.

What areas do you do the band traction on Iain?

I use it for my shoulders Rob. I will do it once a week normally on my assistance bench days.

I choke a band onto the top of a power rack etc then loop it round my wrist, walk away then mobilise my shoudlers through different plains. Normally about a min per arm. Then I'll do band dislocates and finish by standing on the band and dealifting againts it holding at the top for 30s or so. I'll also do some stretching work against a fit ball too. Shoulders feel great after!

ME Sq

Todays plan was to use a squat suit i bought circa 2004, and wraps, to do some supra-maximal squating in place of a high box squat. It didn't go according to plan!!

Squat
Barx10
70x8
120x3
140x3
Put squat suit on- 15 mins later its just on (crotch not up properly) and I am basically fooked lol!!

160x3 no depth (1/2 ROM)
180x3 no depth same as 160
200x1 not even close!!

I realised that it was gona take more than my pb to make it anywhere close to depth and certanly more than I was going to get back up! Was so far of on the 200 that I was trying to relax to make the depth but no cigar, not even a fag end. To pardon the pun I was out of my depth, so took the suit of and did some high box work. Was out of shorts by then though so didn't lift much!

High box squat- 180x3x3
Deadlifts- 140x3, 160x3, 170x3, 190x3, 210x3

Grippers- RH IM*1 x10x3, LH IM*1 x5x3 (nice fast closes).

So ended up a bit of a bo***cks session but there you go lol!! I know what went wrong with the suit though. I have gained about 9kg since I bought it (83-92)! I have only used it 3 times back in late '04 and early '05 and could make depth in 180. Its a size 40 titan centurian and I could put it on with effort. But far easier than today was. People no doubt use suits tighter, but they also know what they are doing.

Next week back to unequipped lifting Tongue
