anyone had this? injured my wrist three weeks ago and whilst better in some things its agony in others and after some reading (dodgy self diagnosis I know! ) I think I might have fractured my scaphoid doing cleans

how long for recovery? if your put in a cast how much grip/hand you still got available in order to grab a barbell and train?

Mate, get it checked out. For various reasons I basically lost about a year of training due to breaking my wrist and having surgery (x 2). Don't leave it to chance get it checked.

I will be. going to go to the hospital to get an x ray tomorrow.

just wondering what the recovery period is. got the bodypower expo strongman in eight weeks and 99% sure will have to pull out but more worried it will limit a huge amount I can do in the gym.

looks like might have to run smolov and just focus on my squats! (again)

Hmm, a training partner of mine had 6 weeks due to a stress fracture incurred from clean and jerking. Mine was worse because I damaged the nerves in the hand (no half measures here!). He just had to get a brace on it so that whatever he was doing was not placing load on the wrist and allow the bones to heal. He has 0 problems now but I am aware that wrist injuries can be problematic. Better safe than sorry, training puts a ton of stress on the wrist.

what kind of brace? I was thinking it would be a cast?

I dont think its terrible even if it is fractured as still have strength in the hand (probably about 95%) in movements like deadlifting and during pressing if I usre a fat grip it feels ok

clearly my focus is long term but I dont want to be regressing on stuff if I can help it

No it wasn't a cast, it was basically something like a carpal tunnel syndrome brace that restricted movements.

I fractured my scaphoid in my first competition cleaning an axel. Here is the video, listen for the 'ow'!

I went on to finish the competition (this was the first event) which no doubt made it worse. I was in a cast for 6 weeks and resumed lifting as soon as it was off, but with lower loads obviously. Started off having to press 60kg when my previous best had been 110kg if memory serves correctly. It built up quite quickly though as it wasn't limited by strength loss, just through wanting to keep the load through the hand down to begin with.

snapped mine clean in half about 15 years ago its now arthritic and hurts to do anything, especially pressing. Nothing anyone can do about it.
I blame rushing to get back out on my bike instead of letting it heal.

Don't rush back!
Spend the time getting a huge squat instead.

yeah its what everyone keeps saying to me. problem is I feel I have spent the last six months working specifically on my squat to the detriment of other lifts and the next three months were meant to be giving my body a break from higher frequency squatting!!!! Happy

I broke mine playing football at college, had it casted twice for about 10-12 weeks altogether. My hand/wrist were really weak by the time they finally came off, think the first cast bent my hand in a bit of a weird position.

Didn't train at the time so can't help with the recovery questions, but hope you get it sorted!

I've learned its a very tricky bone if its broken. Arthritus is common following a break. If I could go back and stay off my bike for a few more weeks I would. It really is horrendously painful at times. tight as f**k wrist wraps help but often it can be completely debilitating and holds me back on the pressing and grip work.

Go get it x-rayed, Until then its just guess work.

Not a lot. A few half arsed squats, a little cardio is all I bothered with really.

Sorry to hear that,

I broke mine about 26yrs ago stiff arming a guy playing American football,

The Scaphoid has a pretty poor blood supply, which sometimes causes issues with healing, which was the case with me, I ended up getting a bone graft, which alleviates some of the symptoms I was having from the initial injury, but knew it was never going to be 100% from then on. If its any consolation? I've trained pretty consistently since with no real issues outside reduced mobility from my other hand, and touch wood no signs of arthritis as of yet.
