Couple quick questions for any competitive lifters

1. On an opening lift would it be a good idea to attempt something you would get usually for 3-5 reps to build confidence?

2. Does lifting in front of an audience improve your performance, maybe with added adrenaline?

Just curious on any of your thoughts on this.

Cheers

Opening lift needs to be safe and should be pretty easy but don't waste an attempt on something ridiculously light.

Lifting in front of a crowd depends on the person, I really like it and normally lift more but I've got a mate who completely lost his nerve at an oly comp once he got on the platform and nearly bombed out because of it.

Good reply, makes sense. I think I would lift better in front of audience. Least hope I will

I don't really notice the audience when I'm on the platform, just focus on the lift. I am nervous before going out, the adrenaline from this does help me.

As for your openers, go for something you can crush. Something fairly easy, like 20kg off your second lift in squats/deads. 5-10kg on bench. Don't be that guy who has to grind an opener. Getting the first lift in will give you confidence.

only done 3 meets but i agree with pretty much what the others have said here. they say something you can do for 3 in training for your openers but i tend to go a little higher than that. how you react to being in a comp and in front of a crowd will be person specific. i find i do lift more at comps though.

A few more pointers would be to get your training partner to call referees commands so you get used to these, at virtually every contest someone will jump the gun on a start or rack command. Read up on the rules too and get honest appraisal on your lifts from people you trust in the gym, even better find some other competitors in your region and arrange a session with them as you'll probably learn a lot from that.

I open with roughly 90% of my intended final lift. 2nd and 3rd attempts are only decided after the preceding lift. E.g if Im hoping to lift 200 I'd probably go 180,190,200 but 2nd and 3rd would definitely be subject to the feel of the 1st.

I lift better on the platform. I don't notice the audience when I'm performing the lift but they definitely give me a huge boost of adrenaline as I'm setting up for the lift.

id say open on whatever would usually be your last warmup set before you lifted whatever your second attempt will be.

as for the audience thing, before my last comp i slept a maximum of about 2 hours before, probably because of nerves. then i got a filthy squat pb and 2 even filthier deadlift pbs, all of which were easy reps. i think this was 90% because of the adrenaline and stuff. best day ever

Some good advice here. All I would add is that it's 'comp', not 'meet'. We're not American.

the comp adrenalin really cant be underestimated. i couldnt get to sleep the night after my last one the other week. buzzing for several hours after, although tired and sore.
