I'd really like to see that 600 race. I think bolt would take a good lead over the 400 and it'd be a job and a half for Mo to claw the distance back in the final 200. Bolt would really have to slow down some I think.
I'd like to see 3 races over 600 700 and 800m so I could plot a graph where both athletes have the same time at a certain distance.

Comparing these two runners would probably be talked about for years to come.

I do think it's a good choice of distance, and the thread reflects that. It seems to me that at 400 it's *obviously* Bolt and at 800 it's *obviously* Mo. I'd love to see it, but we won't Happy.

You know what, out of the current crop of long jumpers, I reckon....Bolt would stand the best chance if he wanted to!

You're probably right!

I think Powell's record is safe for a while yet.

It's a shame we dont see the rivalries like his with Lewis much anymore. You always seem to get one who is just streets ahead.

I'd love to see a good high jump battle. That Bondorenko looks like he's got a decent shot at the WR.

I reckon Bolt will be fitter than people think over longer distances but still feel Mo will edge it.

I agree with what most have posted

Anything 600 or less Bolt win

Anything over 650-700 then Mo has it

Rudisha v Bolt over 600 would be better....and I think Rudisha would murder him

I dont really think we need to get into semantics over speed vs speed endurance. Butch Reynolds was slower over 400m, and he was slower over 200m. We can argue all day about what constitutes speed endurance and speed, but the simple fact is, Johnson was faster over both distances. Who has the better speed endurance? Ie who waa able to run 400m the fastest? We both know the answer to that. You can start fast or finish fast, but over the distance, the only thing that counts is your time.
Look, I'm not doubting that Bolt is an out and out freak, that would be ridiculous. I am arguing that we cant just extrapolate his freakiness out to other events and suggest that he would be better than others, who have quite simply never been close to being touched. (Unless Warriner ran times that I am not aware of). Of course Johnson is in awe of Bolt, who on the planet who has seen him isn't?
Where do you draw the line? Do you think it's a given that he would smash the long jump world record if he wanted to as well? After all Carl Lewis did it, and Bolt runs faster than Lewis so it must be a given, right? Jumping isn't some genetic gift, it's just trained for, right?

So MJ 200 = 19.3 ...400 = 43.18

Butch 200= 20.3ish ...400 = 43.29

Wariner 200=20.19...400 - 43.45

MJ clearly has superior speed endurance and not just superior speed according to you.

It is generally seen that if Bolt was going to pick another event it would be long jump and not the 400, he has said so himself. Sprinting and long jumping goes very much hand in hand. Bolt being 6ft 6 would be an advantage in long jumping if he could capitalise on it, his landing would be the most important part.

I wasn't aware that something similar to this had happened before...

400m = Pbvious Bolt win

800m = Obvious Farah win.

They will draw at somewhere around 600 but noone can no for sure unless they tried it. We don't know what will happen to Bolts pace past 400 etc etc.

Conspiracy theory time:

It's a setup by Richard Branson for a giant Virgin advert which will happen at some point in the off season for lulz and be streaming live over the internet to millions with thousands of Virgin Broadband adverts being forced down your throat in the overly long build up to the race. Wink

Everyone is mentioning Bolt acclimatising to the longer distance to get real good at it, through which he will greatly improve hid ability to do 600m+ of course.

But I think sprinting is far more of a challenge physically for a long distance runner. Someone like Mo is very slight and small, lacking the muscle mass, height and power to really tear away at the shorter distances. So HE would also have a lot of potential gain by dedicating training to it properly (except for the height), which I doubt he would for a little stunt.

It would certainly prove to be an interesting race.

I would hazard an educated guess that Bolt would claim victory however due to his longer stride and power abilities over the diminutive Farah.

Mo is a great athlete and a really nice person when you meet him but provided Usain did not get carried away with injecting to much pace early on he should cruise to a comfortable victory.

This is a very interesting question and I would agree the distance of 600m is very well chosen.
We have all seen Bolt dominate shorter distances and seen Farah completely change a race in 5 or 6 paces, when he decides to kick nobody can stay with him.
However, comparing PB times gives an artificial view of the outcome.
We have to bear in mind that over a typical 100m or 200m race Bolt is caning it knowing he has to dominate from the start and knowing he only has to maintain that pace for 200m, and over a typical 800m race Farah is pacing himself and tends to kick towards the end, knowing he has 800m to go.
In this scenario Bolt couldn't do the entire distance at full pace and Farah wouldn't pace himself to the same extent, knowing that Bolt would open up too much of a gap if he did.
My money would be on Farah taking it over the last 30m to 40m, Bolt tying up with lactic acid and running out of steam.
However, my personal preference would be to watch female athletes instead.
