The basics
.
Log
Farmers
Big ass tyres
Sandbags

You can do most movements with all of that equipment.

I started of with a log and some farmers. Slowly added stuff to it when funds permitted.

How relevant is strongman equipment in the early stages? Would people be better served building up their strength before worrying about the technique of strongman kit? (Genuine question)

I think the earlier you get your hands on equipment the better really.

You can continue to build your static gym strength alongside getting used to the more awkward strongman events.

I agree. I'm not strong so before I go off and buy any equipment or go to a gym with it, I need to get stronger!

I feel that the extra variety of equipment has helped with my strength gains alongside gym work, even though I have only used strongman equipment a few times, I have gained more strength than I do when just gym training.

Due to limited funds ive only currently got the following but am hoping to build it up over time:

Beer Barrel - £1
Army Kit Bag - £4.50
Sand For Weight - Free From Blackpool Beach

Can use the above for loading medleys, pressing, carrying etc and its cost me practially nothing.
