Any experts around. I think I know the basics, but not sure if all the info from NHS etc is really correct. I understand the carbs/sugar/pancreas stuff etc. Just not sure about some of the diet guidelines. Is low fat really necessary? Why?? How about being overweight... Does it raise chances of developing type2 and if so why?

Hi Pete, I am not an expert but did complete my L4 Diabetes & Obesity course last year.

Being "overweight" does not necessarily lead to diabetes but given that BMI is used for most studies and the general populations do not carry much muscle mass the link is clearly there between obesity & type 2 diabetes. If you train regualrly and eat well but are technically overweight on the BMI scale you will likely be fine... you can still create insulin resistance through your diet which may lead to diabetes but the chances are much lower.

There is no need at all to eat a low fat diet, I expect that eventually the government/NHS will catch up on this and change their guidelines. Replacing processed carbs with natural fats would certainly be a good thing.

Thanks Ben. Exactly as I thought tbh.
Looking into this now, primarily so I can educate my 7 year old girl. Her grandma is type 2 diabetic, although you wouldn't know it to see what she eats. She takes no responsibility for her health, preferring to blame the wrong drugs. I want my daughter to learn from this if anything, as her grandma sits eating s**t whilst whinging about being tired and having blurred vision because the DR's have given her the wrong meds!!

The maternal side of her family is also obese, so I am also trying to manage diet to avoid this recurring, although it is difficult. She already eats more healthily than most kids her age but is a lot heavier despite this. The fact that other parentsthink iI'm evil for not letting her eat crap all the time pisses me off and makes me wonder if they are totally ignorant to diet and it's effects on health, or just don't care about their children's future. I seriously want to punch the living f**k out of these people.

Also, can type 2 diabetes actually be 'caused' by a diet high in sugar/processed carbs etc?

I expect research shows that the majority of people with type2 are obese, so link it to the illness rather than thinking that they are obese because of their diet, which has brought on/exacerbated the diabetes?

if your fat but active your chance is less but it appears that obesity is independent of activity as a risk factor

m.care.diabetesjournals.org/content/30/1/53.full

as such if you want your family to reduce their diabetes risk then you need to control both their weight and keep them active. whilst weight will be positively impacted by increased activity levels diet is key in proper weight control. keep doing what your doing and ignore others

I've always had a very high sugar consumption and wonder if I've condemned myself to future diabetes. I'm obviously "obese" too. After Easter I'm going to make some changes...

biggest factor for diabetes 2 is stress
next maybe obesity
good here is u can read the sypmtomps early
sticky lips and a need to drink a lot of water, urinating a lot, erectile dysfuncion

high carb or fat diet is not always a factor for increasing blood shugar
but if signs of diabetes are on low carbs and a lot of cardio will help
most people who have a lot of body fat have high blood shugar and bigger risk of diabetes is there

Regardless of any factors within ones control the biggest cause prior to any other is genetic disposition.

If someone in your family is/was diabetic you are at increased risk. The risk increasing the closer the relation.

Not saying you won't get it if nobody in your family has it but you are far less likely than someone with a family history.

Don't know if this is anecdotal (http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2013/may/12/type-2-dia... but there are claims that type 2 diabetes can be reversed by diet

With some people abusing slin for gainzzzz, is it possible that diabetes (either type, slin or tablets) could be used to ones advantage without jeopardising health?

No, not really.

It's certainly more of a hindrance, especially when it comes to gaining (a lot) of weight, than anything else
