I am looking at increasing my knowledge on both training and nutrition, having just searched Amazon I see the vast amount of books/e-books etc out there rather than waste money, What books you would recommend?

For simplicity on 'what matters' - the art of lifting by Greg Knuckles.

For more in depth - Supertraining by Mel siff.

Still in depth but a bit of an easier read - maximal muscle by Matt Perryman.

Periodisation - by bompa.

Nutrition - a guide to flexible dieting by Lyle McDonald.

Generic training plans/routines - 5/3/1 - j.wendler, the juggernaut method - c.smith, the cube method - b.lilly , the Bulgarian method - g.knuckles, squatting everyday m.perryman.

Edit - supplements, the ebook from examine.com.

zatsiorsky.

I also enjoyed randall strossen's super squats for interesting history of the lift (notwithstanding it is full of outlandish claims
about gaining 2 stone of muscle in 6 weeks doing just 20 rep squats and drinking milk)

Don't get anything by Greg Nuckols.

Get The Keys to Progress. That was a solid book.

As soon as I see a % sign in a training book my brain switches off so I prefer more 'interesting' than scientific books;

Dinosaur Training - I like all Brooks' stuff and I would love to see how worn down HIS CAPS LOCK KEY IS!

Keys to progress - not many books about weight training are genuinely funny

The strength of Samson, and how to obtain it - funny for entirely different reasons. From memory it's mainly about doing partials in the dumbell bench press until you have the power to collapse the cells in your finger tips and shoot lightning from them, which sounds like a Paul Savage goal.

Rock, Iron, Steel - Steve Justa looks like, and most likely smells like, a hill billy rapist and his book is awesome. I wonder if anyone ever took him up on his offer of private training?

Spartan Health Regime - more all round health than weight training specifically but has some interesting stuff and can probably be googled guilt free as the author seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth.

Copied and pasted from another forum;

"Nuckols lifted bigger after 3 years of powerlifting as a teenager than 99% of the people on the planet. (755 squat, 475 bench press, and 725 deadlift) He's only had to struggle through minor issues. And all drug tested.

So...here you have a guy who is built for the powerlifts, basically. He's a bit Asbergers-ey, I'd say similar to Lyle, and fails to see the issue when people don't do well on his programs.

He says some s**t both about bench form and squat form that doesn't jive with logical thought...i.e. arms should be perpendicular to the body (and ironically, in a recent bench vid, he looks just as conventional on a 400+ raw bench as anyone else)

So the combination of

1) never had to struggle for strength
2) hyperfocus
3) the arrogance of the young, strong and uninjured

makes you have to filter his s**t pretty hard."

And like that... he is gone.
