The spotter was Dan Bell, also competing apparently.

Still competed but with a broken thumb according to some posts I just read elsewhere. Managed to get a decent pull.

I don't think anyone posting was 100% sure though.

What did he deadlift?

I am impressed with the bench. Would be good to see all the best competing with each other in powerlifting at some point.

Malanichev tore his pec in training.
Would have been great to see what he could total.
He looked like he was in best shape ever.

Zahir was shaking like a s**tting dog from the off as soon as he took the weight of the bar; it was obvious he wasn't going to squat it!

Looks like a lot of his squats aren't deep either; not 'Yank style multi-ply not-deep', but still, questionable depth IMO

472.5kg deep in competition is not questionable.Holds the 2nd highest total of any weight class and world record at -125kg.
You do as if he can barely squat 300 to depth and is crazy for trying 480kg.
He himself said that he got to excited and opened too high.

He was crazy for trying 480. Surely the fact he bombed out proves this to you???

I dont see how you are trying to argue with everyone? Especially since you say captain dick head himself admitted he f**ked up.

Thats not what i am trying to do.
I just can't understand why people act like he can't lift s**t in competition.
He is pretty much the best squatter in the world and he proved it.
He wasn't crazy for trying 480kg.It was just not his day.
He squatted above 480kg a couple of times in training. And had the goal of 500kg in comp.So why not try it?
But i definately agree that he at least in the past was acting like a piece of whatever.

If the best sprinter in the world made false starts he'd be criticized. If a boxer sticks his chin out and got dropped, the same goes.

I just think a great lifter should know to leave his ego at the door. A beginner that has squatted 160 in training, would most likely know to open 140 or less.

His 500 plus videos were as high as a kite. So basically he opened with over 95% of his above parallel max. He's one of the best in the world, but that is crazy.

And before anyone says who am I to criticize? I'm just a weak fan. You don't need to be able to play football like Messi, to know not to kick someone inside the box.

Zahir will be back, no doubt. It was terribly silly though.

Zahir is awesome. Opening on 480 is cool as f**k. Any t**t can make a total in powerlifting, that's boring. It's not like it matters! Having the balls to attempt something everyone else says is crazy is why I'm a fan, not because he can play it safe and finish a game of s**t boring powerlifting...

I agree with you for the most part.
But Zahir squatted "high as a kite" during all of his last cycle and ended up with 472.5kg to depth which was above anything he squatted "high as a kite" before.
But his 480kg he should just have reracked because it looked horrible unstable from the beginning.
He put people in danger and somebody got hurt.Thats was a bad move.

I'm a novice but can someone explain to me why they don't use pins in competitions? Isn't that much safer?

Because the bar would be completely ruined if dropped on solid pins with such weights, even half that would probably be enough.
