Hi all, firstly, im starting to get some pain in my base of my thumb/wrist when snatching. Once i warm up it mainly disappears but is prominent to start with. It also hurt if i squeeze my hand together (obviously i try to not do this alot lol)

anyone else suffer? i dont want to adjust grip width this close to a comp, so can anyone recommend some rehab protocols for this? and some good ways to tape and wrap my hands.

Im seeing my physio tomorrow so hopefully he'll have some ideas, however he wont have first hand experience as he isnt/wasnt a WL'er.

ive been icing and using Ibuprofen (only half doses).

Hi Owen,

Is the pain near to the carpal tunnel area of the hand/wrist (base of thumb/palm are):

http://www.healthcentral.com/ency/408/guides/000034_9_2.html

If so, you have a sheath of connective tissue here (the carpal ligament) that sits across/transverse to a nerve called the median nerve. This ligament can get inflamed and beaten up with training. It can be pretty sore and tender if you are not careful.

If so, it would probably be wise (after your comp) to let it settle down a bit and do some mobility work on the area till the pain subsides.

Thats assuming that is what it is though mate.

I've been getting similar thumb pain the past week since my session on Friday. It didn't hurt during the session but ever since the following morning my thumbs have been stiff. Basically just hurts a bit clenching a fist etc. All in the thumb. It's lessened a bit over the days, I reckon it's just me adjusting to using a hook grip so frequently?

cheers dave, not sure i can pinpoint it to CPS but could be that. The pain is a bit 'blunt' shall we say, as in i cant exactly place the pain. ill have a look for some mobility stuff for now, and just carry on taking ibuprofen. I have a week planned off after my comp so i just want to get through these next 2 weeks Happy

not sure if its due to hook grip or not....but ive been using it for a while. I reckon it might be down to going from doubles and triples to heavier singles. Annoying

I had the same issue recently. I trained with straps for a few weeks and it went away.

Owen,
Dont think it is CTS mate, your too young for that, but it could be that the ligament maybe a little strained or inflamed.

CTS is when the median nerve becomes entrapped due narrowing of the tunnel, which causes problems in the thumb or forefingers.

cheers dave, think you might be right. As i catch a snatch my wrist is angled in back towards my body, and although the bar rests in the right place, i think that inwards tilt is the problem.

ill give the wrists stretches a go, it wasnt too bad today, i taped it with kinesio tape and strapped it up, and very slightly moved my grip in.

c&j are fine unless i catch the clean like a nob.

Do it. Be sure to massage the area well too mate. Transverse friction is good for stuff like this. All that means is to rub across the ligament. You can do this with the opposite thumb. Do that for a little while and then have a go at mobilizing the area too.

Hope it helps. I think had something similar to you a while back. Bothered me for a few sessions and was pretty painful whenever I stretched the wrist/thumb, so snatches were a no go for a little bit. Eventually it calms down though mate.

thanks for the help mate, just saw my physio and he wasnt hugely concerned. He's convinced its muscular damage from the radial deviation of holding a snatch.

He ultrasounded it, massaged it and im all taped up. He suggested reinforcing the base of the thumb with tape to support the radial deviation for the short term. Long term he suggested a few exercises mainly to do with strengthening the forearms, and ill take it upon myself to move my grip inwards over time which will benefit my pull anyway.

Ill also carry on icing, using ibuprofen and massaging it too
