Worst I have is 10% they are Bodypower plates. Of the 4 20's I have in that brand the weights were 18, 19.8, 20.3 and 20.6. I am assuming some of the brands are more accurate than others. I added a bit of weight to the ones that were under.

Where on earth did you pull the 5% figure from? Its complete and total bulls**t. The difference between calibrated and bumper plates is less than 1% for every manufacturer ive ever looked at.

It is not complete and total bulls**t it is the maximum allowable tolerance on any weight by law and is +/- the tolerance. This has been proved time and again and is an argument that happens at many a gym.
Some manufacturers are worse than others, we have in the past weighed York and strengthshop bumpers and cast plates with calibrated scales and they have come in between 18.3 kgs and 21.7kgs. I also know someone else who did the same thing at another gym and came up with some wild differences.

Had that with Jordans at the local rec last year.
A 25kg was 23kg. A 20kg was 22kg! No wonder I sometimes missed/hit a pb least expecting it.

I know people that have pulled comfy reps at a certain weight and then failed at another gym with different plates but supposedly the same weight.

That's what I've been saying. The all time deadlift has crawled up a kilo here and there and it's not because they're doing an alexeyev, lifting within their limits and getting a new house each time a small increment is made. It's all out, balls to the wall, nose bleeds and torn shins stuff. If 500kg happens I will eat a whole plate of my words, humble pie and hat.

There's enough word eaters on here to make a word eating orgy, and a good one where no one storms off in a huff because they feel left out. There may be a handful of guys who can 'only' beat the WR by a Kg or so, but this may not be enough to appease the masses. If 500 was on there would be video's of 475+'s popping up by now. What would be the point of being secretive at this stage?

Ed didn't look at his limit last year. It looked relatively comfortable for a wr. Throw in a suit on top of that and I don't see any reason why he won't be close at least

A lot of guys in this thread don't know Ed

He is the Usain Bolt of the deadlift.

He did 350x3x8 on deads last week... Your average 300 deadlifter on here try to do 3 sets of 8 with just 200 and you'd struggle!

No disrespect to Bolton as I love the guy but he only did 350 for singles in training really, here we are talking about someone who does 24 f**king reps with it in one session!

Have some f**king faith 500 is going IF Giants Live give him the go ahead to pull it.

No standard gym plates are +/- 1%

For that kind of accuracy you are looking at something like ivanko ez grip plates at £6 per kilo.

For the usual £1.50 / £2 plates, 5% tolerance will be about right.

I calibrated my weights (a mix of body power, Marcy and York plates) and some plates in every brand were in that 5-7% bracket (20's went from 18.4kg to 21.6kg)

I also weighed a bunch of cast York plates at my local gym with similar results

It is certainly an interesting conundrum...if you lift at home on the same plates I know many lifters keep the same plates for each side of the bar, so it is certainly an argument for changing them around periodically.

As for the 500 - even if it did happen I would just automatically wonder what they did to the bar to make it happen. Unhappy

Funny you mention Bolt because I was going to use him as an example of why the 500kg deadlift isn't going to happen any time soon. If Bolt said he was in great shape and started talking about sub 9 second 100m times most would, quite rightly, suggest it ridiculous, even for a freak like Bolt. A 500kg deadlift would be a significantly bigger improvement. Even with the argument that the deadlift world record is soft (and I'm not sure it is), it still makes it very very very unlikely. We're talking about a near 9% improvement.

Doesn't make it impossible, but come on, let's get real here. It's pretty damn unlikely.
