Great to hear your back in training now buddy, sounds like the lay off with illness might have helped you in some ways, it ovi got the hunger for lifting up and sounds like your bench has come on well.

Lol you'd best not look at any of my recent lifting then haha Grin

So I came back to deadlifting today after a couple of weeks off ill. Piratebrido was also in the same boat and on his second last week of 5s.

I started with deads.

Deadlift:

1x8/135
1x8/132
1x8/130

Considering the length of time I've been off and haven't deadlifted, I'm happy that I kept some strength in the lift. I was expecting a bigger drop in performance than what actually happened.

I moved on to my last week of speed bench as my dynamic movement.

Bench Press (Speedbench)

8x3/70

Bent over rows: 45 degree back position.

4x6/80kg

I've not done these in ages, it was great fun!

Brido is still lifting stronger. It was his first heavy bench session ever today. Previous to today, he had only done 3 weeks of speed bench. He managed an easy 100kg.
His deads really are coming on spectacularly too. He's gonna be one hell of a strong guy and when he goes back to Judo and wrestling, I have no doubt that he'll be tossing folk like they're made out of straw.

Good to see you back at it.

Just looking at your speed bench, what is your best Bench ? How fast were those speed lifts ? I'm only asking as they look a bit heavy, to me anyway, but then my bench is s**t and I'm only mentioning it as I'm a bit unsure of my own speed bench sessions and looking at yours it just made me wonder !

Keep it up...

Hey dude. Good question.

This was my final week of speedbench.
I did many weeks of speed bench working up to around 70% max by the end just yesterday. I do understand that the speedbench is heavy but the reason that I started that bit heavier is because personally I seem to have good velocity even at heavier weights eg. 70% max. I do understand that you're meant to use approximately 50% max though.
I'm hoping to attain a 107.5kg-110kg bench on this Tuesday coming before finding another dynamic movement, possibly something involving plyometrics to mix it up a bit?
When I come back around to speedbench, I'm gonna give the 50% max a go, progressing by 5% each week.
The last 100kg bench that I performed went up rather easily

Today was squat day.
I've been lifting for pretty much bang on 3 months now, So I decided that it's time to find out my single. I knew that my single would be close to my fives but f**k, I never knew it'd be this close!

I worked up to this.

Squats:

1xfail/130
1x1/125 PB???

The 130 fail was pretty hilarious. I went arse to the grass, pushed up past parallel, went up some more, got pretty close to the top and then stuck. It was officially the highest sticking point in the galaxy.

The rep at 125 felt great though. I went arse to the grass again, and banged it right up there like it was nothing.
Still, this squat is really quite laughable to most people. I've always had weak and very skinny legs.My knee joints are as wide as most folks elbow joints but the upside of my thin legs is that I can run 20 miles cross country after about 2 weeks training when I drop to 13 stone. I'll just have to keep plugging away and plugging away. I'd love to get a 150 squat one day.

Front squats:

3x5/70 (I really like this exercise.)

Benchpress:

2x8/75
1x10/75

Barbell rows:

3x6/90

Was a fun day I guess. I've never gone near max on squats before but I enjoyed it. Hopefully in another 3 months there'll be another 10 plate on each side.

OK so this now baldy weed is getting psyched up for the squats again today. I had a nice long sleep last night.

When I went to Perth I slipped off the wagon of no drink and polished off a bottle of Jack which seemed like a good idea at the time but was an idea I'm now not very proud of. The chap who I was making my way home with was also K.O.d until about mid afternoon so I never left early enough to make training. I was looking forward to my first week of 4s too.(Have decided to do 4s instead of 6s)

Since then I've been sleeping, resting and eating religiously, even going to the quiet room at lunchtimes in college to close my eyes for a little bit.

I'm looking forward to these squats. I'm going balls to the wall tonight!

22:18

The session was good.

Squats:

1x4/115kg
Only went to parallel on two of the reps

3x4/115kg
Using a slightly wider stance this time. When I squat just past shoulder width I'm resting on my hunkers only slightly below parallel. With my legs slightly wider than just past shoulder width, my bottom position is a good bit lower. On my last two sets I had to concentrate on using some aggression and not laugh because I was hit with that high sticking point again. Off the floor I'm feeling great now, almost like an elastic band, but at that high sticking point, I slow right down until I pass it. When I pass the sticking point I boing right up there to finish the squat. It's something I'll have to work on as I reckon it must be due to a fault in technique somewhere?

I had some great coaching from Bryan and Stevie tonight. They always get me doing things better every week and feeling comfortable seems to be so important for your concentration. I'm coming on. Slowly!, but progress is progress!

Benching was fun tonight.

Benchpress:

3x4/90kg
The bar feels so steady in my hands now. I've also found my foot position.

Barbell rows:

3x5/90kg
I went climbing a couple of days back so took it pretty easy with these badboys tonight.

All in all, I'm still learning how to squat a little safer every week and I know that I have a long way to go, but journeys are fun for me. I think hard about getting my 150kg squat one day which spurns me on even when I leave the centre for the night. I can't wait until the next week arrives as I'm determined to be as strong as you buggers one day.

Al, Bry and I were doing the same thing on Friday but he was in Inverness and I was in Perth. I actually called him at about 3am. He said I sounded like Mars Attacks. AK AK AK AKAK AAK AK!

Plenty of rest has been taken lately and today I was working a technical fault as to get used to doing things properly. I had Bryan Coaching me. Today Bry did a 170x8 unequipped at 82kgs. I think that it was a new PB for him. He really went balls to the wall. Inspirational stuff.

Squats:

2x4/110
1x5/110

Front Squats:

2x5/90

Benchpress:

2x4/92.5

1x5/92.5

Barbell rows:

3x6/90

I felt pretty good today. Working my wider stance whilst squatting was a little unusual and I didn't feel quite so powerful but all but 1 of my reps was healthily within depth. I'm still having to sit right down on my hunkers to achieve it though. I'll need more coaching and technique work because there's still a problem.
