Hi Guys!

I'm not a particularly impressive squater (doing reps on around 120 kg), but I was wondering at what point in peoples training career they brought a belt?

I squat high bar ATG by the way, I have heard that belts are less beneficial to people that squat like this than PL style

Scott Yard on elitefts squats plenty and pretty deep and is very much an exponent of using a belt, insomuch as he advised against someone insisting on NOT using one.

Some people belt up from 100kg upwards. Some from 70 - 80% of their 1RM. Some for their heaviest set(s).

Try one and see how you feel.

at what weight do you feel you would benefit from adding one?

regardless of what weight you use it from (I'd advise using it on a lighter weight then you really need to at first to help break it in on a weight your comfortable with doing) always aim to slowly increase the weight in which you add the belt

for example I used to add a belt at around 140kg, now I go to 200kg before adding one

The belt will help less with that style of squatting because of the more upright torso, which means there is less torque (using the physics rather than engineering definition) on the mid section.

A belt is definitely a good training tool that will help you get stronger and squat more. The key when using one is to make sure that you can still squat heavy without it - although obviously not quite as heavy as with it.

120 is probably as good a time as any to get a belt.

cheers guys. i think the best advice is to try a belt on low weight first. Will borrow one of the old belts they keep on the gym and try it with 60 kg to see if its useful first

You probably won't notice any difference at 60kg, to be honest.

Belt on for working sets or last warm up if I'm going to max.

Squat belt on for 230+ (unless repping weight)
Deadlift Belt on for 250+ (unless repping weight)

everyone is different , but i would suggest that if your full fit and have perfiect form for you body type and lever there is no reason to have one. BUT if you feel that you need one then try to develop your working sets up to your top weight where you would put a belt on, this is an ideal situation that i would love to do and i'm trying to do this now in my rehab. it would mean a slower progression but in the long run i think you would benefit from this.

However as soon as there is any change in torso angle the moment will be greater as distance from fulcrum and load is greater than in a low bar squat Happy

When to use a belt... whenever you want to lift a few kg more.

Learn how to brace you core in and out of a belt and do plenty of work without it (dosn't have to be the staright lifts) and vola... nil problemo.

Not necessarily. It depends on the extent to which the angle has changed, and also how great the distance is between the low and high bar positions. However, the load is extremely unlikely to be greater because almost everyone can squat more weight using the low bar position than the high bar position.

Even when I used to go GM high bar squats, I still felt it less in my lower back than what I feel low bar squats using proper form.

I also use the same principle for deadlifting.

But as mentioned some like my bro never use them even on max sets, others use them earlier during warm ups.
Personal preference at the end of the day only you will know and find out when it's truly needed.

Yes there are lots of variables.
