Hello All,

Whilst doing soem strict presses last night I got wondering about what actually constitues a strict press...

Is is

  • A - Pressing using no momentum at all
So you unrack the bar and press it from a dead stop from your neck

or
  • B - Pressing without using any leg drive
So you unrack the bar and press it using a little dip on the bar to generate some initial momentum - as log as your legs stay locked all is good

Confused Confused Confused

I've seen people do both and just wondered what the consensus was?

Cheers

Macca

A is how you should strict press IMO

If you strict on a log, it kind of eliminates doing B

I suppose technically A. However if B doesn't actually get any leg drive just movement then it's still strict if only your shoulders are lifting the weight.

Moving hips or bouncing bar or moving under the bar is fine, thats how the guys used to do it in the days of Clean & Press at the Olympics.
Like this alltime fave of mine:

Even if I think this is a borderline non-strict press, but theres no leg drive to get the bar moving, its to get his hips into a different position rather than legs down, push bar up.

Exactly. There will always be body movement in other areas during a lift. So, strictly, a strict press is never a strict press.

Serge - looked strict from that angle...

Vasily - clear knee bend!

Smallsy - see if you can find some Doug Hepburn strict press vids... he was awesome.

I dont see any difference between a hip kick or knee bend in terms of whether or not it's 'strict', with either, it clearly isnt.
