In an ideal world, what would your preference for the order of the three powerlifts be?

I would choose bench press, squat, deadlift - the reason being that I don't like the long wait between squat and deadlift, I think I'm more likely to cramp up then feel refreshed. As long as there is a brief rest between first and second round then surely this would be enough time? Benching would go first as after squats and deads you'd be too tired to do anything else.

I thought it was crazy at the BPC British when some lifters ended up with around 4-5 hours between their squats and deadlifts. Must have been very tough mentally and there were a few injuries which could possibly have been due to the long day.

i agree with the current order. I am usually pretty spent from adrenaline and exertion after squats - might be partly why my bench always let me down in comps - but of the three lifts, bench is the least tiring I find and less leg-dominant which makes for a nice "rest" between squats and Deads. I need squats first because I am always terrified of them - and just want to get them over! Once squats are done, I can enjoy the comp! I love fnishing on Deads because you can put every last bit of energy in them and I get so much adrenaline for them that I completely crash afterwards! Wouldnt be any good trying to do more than lift a little finger after deads Grin

I think they have the order right. It's tough on teh deadlift but it'd be even tougher if the deadlift was 1st or there was no rest between the squat and the deadlift.

I personally prefer the stiffest possible.

yep agree, order is right as it is. Squats and deads use the same muscles, so it would make sense to have a large gap to aid with recovery.

If you think you are going to cramp, chuck on lots of warm clothes, drink plenty of water and go for a walk to keep yourself warmed up.

After lifting I usually put a trackie top back on and possibly my trackie bottoms.

dont forget salts! I cramp at comps or after comps if i dont have a high intake of isotonic drinks/other salts.

I just brushed severe cramps off with some mind control

I'd like to see squats first , then bench and finally the deadlift

at the british, me n big T started lifting at about 11.45 and didnt finish until after 6, might have been closer to 7.

The pro-nitro stuff Aaron and I drink has salts in, and seems to have alleviated the cramping I was getting on bench.

On the training day Jim had us do squat, dead, bench, which I think makes sense in training, but I strongly suspect the current arrangement is the one making possible the best numbers (or it'd be changed).

Boar, that just seems like bad organisation to me. Much better with that many lifters to eg do the lighter classes first for three lifts and then the heavies for three, if you can't make flights work properly, surely?

I'd definitely have it the way it is, for three reasons:

1) I find squatting a good hip loosener for bench press arching.
2) I like the break between squatting and deadlifting.
3) Deadlifting last is the best option in terms of spectacle for the competition.

Many years ago they used to bench, squat then deadlift in contests I believe. Maybe some of the old timers can tell us what it was like and why it was changed.
