badboy007 | What movements do we need to do to be 'Strong'...? | 18-10-2007 @ 01:10
Dirty little devil Member 138, 356 posts | From Ken Leistner... "To be a strong person, one has to be able to put weights overhead, pull well off the floor and squat"...(NB no benching)... What do you guys think? Personally I think.. Squat Overhead Pull from floor Bench Chin Are the basis of athletic strength, if you can do these well, you will have all the tools you need to be 'strong'. Think poundages can be deceiving, but all the people I think are 'strong' can.. Squat - 250kg's with belt only Deadlift - 250 kg's with belt only lying press (BP) - 140 kg's raw Clean and Press bodyweight Chins (difficult one this- but as we are talking athletic strength and not absolute strength, maybes 20 good reps). Are the above movements all we need to be strong? If so, should we cut out all the rubbish? What you reckon?

Dirty little devil Member 138, 356 posts | Thing, agree bud. However, notice I'm talking about athletic strength, not PL strength. Chins are a good limit on how fat you let yourself get lol. Then again, if you're 300lbs and can do ten chins, you're amazing. At 150lbs 10 chins is not good! I suppose I should add, up to men of 230lbs or so.

left the country satisfied Member 10, 19241 posts SQ 240, BP 150, DL 270660.0 kgs @ 107kgs UnEq | i've always struggled with these absolute measurements of strong. Mainly because when i was nailing 130kg squat PBs i used to think that 200 squat is really strong. Now i think it is not Same with other lifts, the goalposts change all the time. But it must end at some point? Another way to look at it is comparative measurements, for instance to say that nailing a powerlifting total which would get you to qualify to nationals has to be some kind of benchmark of being strong. Otherwise the whole qualifying notion would become meaningless.

Dirty little devil Member 138, 356 posts | The qualifying totals aren't a good standard Joni. BWLA views unequipped powerlifting as a way to get younger/skint lifters into PL. As such, they deliberately lowered the limits. The actual discussions were, Peter Fiore; Let's make it quite hard to qualify .. Others; NO, we want more lifters at nationals and not less. IMO, look at unequipped qualifiers for somewhere like Finland, Poland, Russia (if they do it). The pinnacle of Powerlifting for me is the NERB, that is how PL should be. The pinnacle of Strongman for me is the Arnold Classic. The pinnacle of OL will always be olympics, for as long as it stays an olympic sport.

One Sexy MoFo Member 101, 2470 posts | 250kg raw squat 300kg raw deadlift Those numbers would instantly make me think someone was "strong".

Dirty little devil Member 138, 356 posts | 300kg raw dealift is the mark of a man, what if he had ridiculous arms though? Deadlift Strict Overhead Are the two lifts I would take as a show of strength, no-one knows what the hell a squat is anymore, and people in IPF want it written out,a bit like the bent press. If PL was ever to go to olympics, it would be Bench Press, unequipped Deadlift, " " People don't want to watch three lifts, with squats suits, knee wraps etc. It's not good for the public. Bench and Deadlift, two events only, I promise, if the sport ever gets to olympic level.

left the country satisfied Member 10, 19241 posts SQ 240, BP 150, DL 270660.0 kgs @ 107kgs UnEq | finlands qualifying totals are much higher in raw category, if there are enough comps to qualify from. So for a guy like me it would be about 650-680. Tough, but definitely a mark of a strong person. Now badboy, the lifts you listed would not be enough for me to qualify in UK either, i would need 630 total, so something like a 250 deadlift is not enough.

Dirty little devil Member 138, 356 posts | 250kg deadlift isn't very strong at 100 kilos or more though. Maybe closer to 300kg for bigger guys.

Dirty little devil Member 138, 356 posts | 250kg deadlift isn't very strong at 100 kilos or more though. Maybe closer to 300kg for bigger guys. Besides, if your pulling 250kg whilst squatting 250kg, I would assume you have short arms, and hence the bench would be in the 170kg region rather than 140kg. Ceteris paribus throughout
