That's interesting.
in a nut shell. 'in kind' benefit, covering coaching, comp support etc is worth around £55k/athlete. On top of that they can be paid up to £27k although the average is £18.5k.
So that's a top whack of £82k costs / podium level athlete. Much less development athletes.
Steve mentioned 6 athletes on top of the 4 previously mentioned in triathlon, lets assume they are all podium level and band A - so that £820k tops for those. wheres the other £6.7 million going?
Im genuinely interested to know.

Well, looking up athletics costs because it's easier to find. This is one big cost right here that i would imagine many sports would also have;

DIRECTORS

The Board Of Directors is tasked with supporting and endorsing high level strategic and financial decisions that shape the delivery of actions within the National Strategy.

Peter King - Chair of the Board

Niels De Vos - UKA Representative (250k man!!!!!)

There around World Class funded athletes listed, on top of which GB tri has a National Performance centre and three satellite
centres each with coaches and access to swimming, track and sports science facilities. I guess this all quickly adds up, but whether it's value for money is another matter.

Before weightlifting lost its funding it would have been interesting to see the split of how much of the money the lifters got compared to the total funding

National performance centre just for triathletes?

Its a bloody s**t storm if you ask me. Im sure these records would be available to the public, maybe through a FOI request?

If we weren't talking about weightlifting, would you think athletes who ranked the same in the World and had the same chance of me calling deserved funding?

And do you thinking funding has done anything to improve the ranking of GB lifters?

I'm sure the facilities are shared, but that doesn't mean they aren't charged for. Weightlifting has/had an High Performance centre. Given the success of Cycling through there Elite centre surely you would expect it to be a model all sports would want to consider

BWL's response:

Dear David,

Following the decision on Tuesday by UK Sport to withdraw funding for British Weight Lifting, I would like to provide you with a brief update.

Although extremely disappointing it was clearly a very difficult decision for UK Sport but I need to emphasise that we have not lost all our funding as outlined in some of the media. I am delighted that our support for IPC Powerlifting remains untouched and that UK Sport have full confidence in the progress of this programme. Much credit must go to Tom Whitaker and his committed team of lifters and support staff for ensuring this is the case.

As regards Weight Lifting it is disappointing but not surprising. Unfortunately our results as a sport did not instil sufficient confidence that we would achieve our targets for the next 6 years.

It is immensely frustrating as the philosophy and programme introduced by the new management team has already had a positive impact but it has not had sufficient time to demonstrate its true value.

However on a positive note the door is not firmly closed and we do have an opportunity to appeal and re-present our case for funding, which we will be doing as a priority in March.

Like all sports there is no given right to funding and it is geared around success. The reality is that we can make excuses galore but we only have ourselves to blame.

Moving forward we will aim to provide a vision and leadership that will offer financial stability for the organisation and genuine support for our lifters to help them in their quest for success on the highest stage.

The next stage of our development is going to be challenging but we need to remain positive, embrace change and move forward with a determination to work harder to achieve success.

Let’s enjoy the journey – it really is a time to unite and get behind the sport.

Finally I look forward to catching up with many of you over the next few weeks as our Championship programme gets well and truly under way.

Good luck to all.

Regards

Ashley Metcalfe

British Weight Lifting

As someone who doesn't give a feck about PC, i want to hear your opinion and won't judge you for it.

Others will though! They will hate you. They will want to burn you on a stake.

f**k it, I was thinking that funding for weightlifting would be more important than funding for Paralympic powerlifting so now feel free to call me a c**t.
