What is the best way to train both?

I'm currently only using the bar for weightlifting but hoping to progress to actual weight soon! Just wondering what the best way to go about training will be?

I think you can combine the two reasonably well since the squat and deadlift are of such importance to the two.

Very quickly thinking of a plan, if you trained 4 times a week you could do something like:

Day 1: Work for squats and deadlifts (pick from squats, front squats, deadlifts, cleans, box squats)
Day 2: Work for pressing, so oh work and bench, (pick from bench with a variety of grips, floor press, the oly lifts, stict and push pressing)

Day 3: Work for squats and deadlifts, using different exercises to day 1
Day 4: Work for pressing, so oh and bench, using different exercises to day 2

Then add in whatever assistance you find neccessary for any weak points, plus work for your abs and back.

My view - pick one or the other and then stick to it if you want to reach a good standard. The time 'wasted' benching could be used to develop snatch technique; or the time 'wasted' on snatch technique could be used to get strong on bench. That's assuming you've not got unlimited time and the boundless energy reserves and recovery ability you would need to do both.

If it's just for fun, maybe squat and deadlift every week and do bench and weightlifting work week about?

following what martin said, if you're gonna jut pick one - i'd go with weightlifting, as i think it would be easier to pick up powerlifting later on if you so wished. Just look at misha.

I'd agree. More skill required to get profficeint at WL.

Cheers guys! apparently im showing potential at weightlifting (what coach says anyway) and i seem to be taking to it pretty quick.

Also being small (and relatively powerful) i think id have more sucess weightlifting

Only time will tell i guess! What is the best split for weightlifting training?

Should i train deadlift/squat? Or concentrate soley on the movements of weightlifting?

like i say, im new to the weightlifting so for the next couple of weeks i'll just be putting it in around my usual training. Once i get to a respecable standard though i'll obviously have to swap in more WL and take out some PL movements.

What is the best way to go about things??

ah fair enough. Don't know much about weightlifting, so I'm sure there's some others on here better suited to helping you out with a routine or whatever

do you want to be medioca at both or possibly good at one ?

I would do oly lifting now you can still be doing powerlifting when you are over 40 and still be decent if you work hard

Im still oly lifting at 42 so ? (snatch 145 CJ 172)

If you are young you could snatch every session as clegg says I would do something like

day 1
Snatch heavy 1-3 reps
Snatch pulls (same weight as snatch for 3-5 reps max 5-8 sets tops
maybe some light back sq

day 2
general training target back, legs, shoulders bit triceps

day 3
Clean and jerk 1-3 rep
Front Squat heavy
clean pull 5x3
light snatch x3s

Do the Olympic lifts to a daily maximum every session. Rotate the powerlifting squat and deadlift according to personal need/preference. Upper body work 2-3 times a week.
