This may seem like an odd thread but just wondered what people think about this. When I was a kid getting into lifting weights with my weider barbell set from argos you used to hear a lot about suitable bone structure for weight lifting or bodybuilding. They talked about wrist sizes a lot in magazines and I was allways dissapointed with my average 7.5" wrists that seemed to doom me before I started. Has anyone got any input on this icluding Terry Hollands who has probably got 9" tree trunks for wrists and dinosaur bones. Does it realy matter or are other things more important and no suggestions about being more of a w***er to increase my wrist size !

Never did Kevin Nee any harm. His ankles are so thin you can see through them.

Look into Samatotyping for info on this. It's a very interesting subject which I spent much time studying whilst in education.Books on the subject are normally obscenely expensive however. Best to buy when students are selling books after the year is out etc. I have a terrible bone structure for weight lifting. My knee joints are narrower than many of my test subjects elbows were and my elbows are brutally narrow.

My bone structure is very ectomorphic.

A good structure for lifting would be dense, thick bones with large, robust joints to take weight. Obviously as far as strength goes though, your nervous and muscular system comes into play a lot. High pressures on small areas cause wear and a broader, larger bone structure can help reduce that wear through distribution of the load being carried over a larger area. If you have high bone density and big wide bones, you're likely to take less damage from lifting high poundages.

Also, if your frame is broader, you'll be able to carry more muscle on board than if it were narrower.

I have done some research on the internet about the various body types with the mesomorph being best suited to gaining muscle and lifting weights. I have read stuff in hard gainer magazines too, it seems that body types are very varied and dont readily fit into different categories. I would be interested to know the bone sizes of elite weight lifters and strength athletes to see if there are any similarities but it probably isnt that simple. I know some guys who are quite light boned but have great muscle genetics and a wide frame that is very strong.

Thats very interesting and what I wanted to hear realy. I allways thought the elite lifters had some sort of super bone stucture and huge joints built for lifting like they used to say about Paul Anderson.

Just been researching this and found some usefull info on a forum.

don't think it matters. Doug Young only had 7.5" wrists and benched over 600. Mark Henry has been reported as having somewhere between 8.5 and 9" wrists and his best was just over 500. Rick Weil as said before had a small bone structure and hit 556 at 181 and 600 at around 200. Bone structure plays a part in strength, but it ain't the whole ball game!

and this

Mendelson has a 10 inch wrist but Mike Macdonald had like a 6 inch wrist! Rick Weil had some of the smallest hands you would ever see on a grown man.

Mendelson 10" wrist OMG ! this is what i was afraid of lol Tongue

Why would you want to increase your wrist size?

I realise it is not possible to increase the size of my bones and was just wondering whether or not you need large bones to be a good weightlifter.

I wouldn't say a 260kg Deadlift and 220kg Squat with no kit is 'Weak as Piss'.
