Every year it is basically the same guys in the squat heats and deadlift heats, the lower down guys don't have a say, happy to be there etc. You get guys who are actually great squatters not getting a load of points on the squats because all the not so good squatters are in the deadlift heat. Would be nice to see what Shaw, Poundstone, Felix and Hollands would do in the squatting event. Was actually good to see Thor having ago last year, it keeps things interesting. I don't understand why the competition is so dictated by the athletes. Colin Bryce needs to get a backbone.

It's dictated by Colin Bryce. Because he is running a TV production company, NOT an athletic disciplines governing body. WSM is an entertainment programme aimed at the recreational sports fan or casual TV viewer. So lots of reps with ridiculous looking equipment for an exciting close competition is the order of the day. WSM is entertainment, not sport, and I think that can largely be traced all the way down the line. Strongman is a circus side show.

I also think it is a genuine sport with a genuine title. It isn't the WWE. I also read an interview with Colin Bryce on muscletalk and he mentions how much the strongmen winge if they're put in a squat heat, so this obviously has an affect on his decision. Making it a draw mixes it up more.

For that same reason I'd imagine we will see another Chinese competitor in this years wsm, as we did last time it was in China. I'm sure there will be many competitors more deserving of a place in the comp than whichever Chinese guy is chosen but having a Chinese competitor makes it more marketable to the Chinese so that's what they will do.

Who wants to see one of the favourites go out in the group stages from being put in a hard group when a no hoper goes through in an easy one? Federer isn't going to play djokovic in the first round of a major, for example.
