Anyone can enter a competition and be terrible (me, for example), that doesn't suddenly make him a better standard than of the competition he just did.

Agreed.

My comp history -

April - First timers - 11th or 12th out of 21 (I think)
June - U90kgs - 4th out of 4
September - Novice - 10th out of 14.

How can I suddenly no longer be a novice after coming last at the scottish U90?

Dosent my 10th out of 14 at the novice comp clearly show I'm a novice?

Andy / Ken i understand what your saying but i don't agree i think there's a big difference in a guy 120+ kilo doing the open national title compared to me doing the under 90's the weight its self is night and day. this novice comp weights were perfect for me and as you can see there werent light and i certainly never walked away with it... if i thought for one minute there were too light i wouldnt of done it and i'm sure nick and brian wouldnt of let me.......

I understand the point being made, but to be fair, (and definately no offence meant to Ian and Youngy) the Scottish under 90's aren't really at the same level as the english. I think if the top few from englands under 90s competed (the likes of James, Boar, Kenny, Shane) maybe a lot of people would complain as they are at a higher level, and would quite likely have taken even Scott to the cleaners.

Anyway, the important point to clarify is... did I get 10 reps on the deadlift or what? lol

Tongue

oi pete we will see about that lol Tongue

Depends, if there's 5 really non novices doing the comp then no but on paper I wouldn't put you out of the novice category. However there comes a point where you shouldn't do novice comps simply because thats what you've been doing and its time to improve and bite the bullet.

But it also depends on your strength levels, you are NOT a novice if you are pulling 600lbs, squatting 500, etc etc
Not a dig at Scott!

lol, no offence meant Ian. But from what I've seen these guys are squatting around 220kg, deadlifting 260-290kgs and throwing 120kgs logs overhead! Freaky!! You are right though, as I don't know how that will translate to comp performances in comparisson to you. Give em hell anyway! Happy

Some people will NEVER be any higher level than novice, especially u90 clean guys, or because they choose not to, or can't get any stronger

People always talk about progressing to the next level, but for a lot of people, doing novice comps is good fun, and an end in its self.

This should not be taken away from them!

Youngy should be allowed to do novice comps as long as he wants

Brians philosophy is PERFECT, if they are stupidly too strong and have done loads of comps, no dice, if they are strong with few comps, no big wins, fine(thosebananas). If they are u90 scottish champ, fine, cause fundamentally, they are pretty small

I like what Drew was saying, lets name comps light, medium and heavy, because novice doesn't really mean anything, you could have been doing strongman for 20 years, your just not very strong, but you love to do it. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT!

here here, although I disagree about Youngy, he'll be beyond a novice standard soon.

I agree Pete but he said as long as HE wants. I'll know when I'm no longer a novice and I won't be glory hunting in novice competitions.

good point.
I like the log press weight posted above as a guide. 90kg log is still hard for me, if/when I can do a few reps with 105 I won't do any comps that are at a standard as to have a 90kg log.
