You are all cordially invited to attend the Uk Strongman North finals where you can witness some adlington faces battling it.

See Mick Ashurst destroy the deadlift event. This brutally strong powerlifter turned strongman is putting in increasingly impressive performance from competition to another.

Watch Shawn kenny dig deep and beast the events one by one. The stones will fly when this guy gets his hands on them.

And Joni.

Bloody great competition today. Mick got a superb 2nd, and Joni a highly creditable 7th in very exalted company. Here's a link to some pics... http://martinsgoldenblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/pictures-from-uk...

great pics martin! Nice one mate, always a pleasure to meet you.

My write up:

well, its now done and dusted.

Beastly performances from guys like Mick Ashurst (2nd), Mick Townsley (3rd) and Lee Bowers (4th). Was good to see the guys do so well.

I am happy and disappointed at the same time. Not disappointed in a negative sense but in a sense of knowing which areas i need to attack to improve.

Firstly, it dawned to me there that this was no "light open" comp or anything like that which had been my plan to enter during this and next year. It was proper heavy ass comp. Everything was very heavy Grin Or rather, i was just not strong enough.

Placed 8th out of 10 competetors. Not bad, didnt lose to anyone worse than me. Happy about vikings and yoke, disappointed about deadlift and stones, medley and truck were what they were. I dont really care about placings at this stage, just want to be able to get to a level where i can put some proper work in even if the weights are heavy.

Run down:

1. Truck pull, 10 tons, slight incline. Harness, no rope.

No previous experience and it showed. Stalled early when i hit the incline and story was over. Last place.

2. deadlift, slightly higher than normal bar height, starting weight 270, round robin with 20kg increases.

Failed with the opening weight, got it to knees and stalled. Damn.

3. Viking press, 140kg, max reps 90 seconds

Had to go first due to being last in previous events. Was worried if i would get any reps, but ended up with 10! I think i was 7th on this. Very happy.

4. Yoke, 360kg for 25m

f**king heavy, but managed a PB. Dont know a distance, something like 10-11m i think. Was 6th on this, my best placing of the day.

5. Medley: 180kg power stairs (18 inch steps), 200kg duck walk for 10m, massive blue barrel half full of water for 10m

Stairs was suprisingly easy, but the duck walk murdered me. Dropped it several times and gassed out. moved the barrel a bit which gave me 8th place.

6. Stones 110-165(?) starting from 6ft height

Failed with the first stone to 6ft - just was not strong enough to press the stone over the edge. Majorly pissed off with that.

Overall, really fun day, and i enjoyed myself. Its a well run comp with lots of volunteers from the rugby club making sure things run smoothly, and the spectator crowd was massive.

I need to hammer the deadlift and everything else as well if i want to mix with these monsters in the future. Next year i would like to aim to be 5th-6th and even that means loads of work over the winter.

There is a lot of work to be done...

Well I was there yesterday and enjoyed the comp. There was an abundance of neoprene, beer and burgers on a sunny Bank Holiday in Northwich. Someone had decided to let the local council estate out judging by the number of fat slags tramping around with bottles of WKD in one hand a fag in the other.

Good gutsy performance from Joni, especially on the Viking Press. Another good stone of muscle and the Flying Finn would be pressing the bigger boys for the trophies next year. I am afraid I have to say it mate - meat and steriods - they are the answer.

From the field those who stood out were the big four - Mick Townsend, our Mick, Lee Bowyers and Wayne Tunstall. The rest of the boys were really good prospects but need to work on static power to go with the athleticism they already have. Ed Hall and Colin (?) at 20 and 23 respectively are definately one's to watch out for.

Mick Ashurst was certainly no surprise to me or any of us who know him in coming in second, although I think he surprised a few of the others. The events suited Mick but even those like Viking press and truck pull are really no longer bad events for him. More event work and a good off season on the squats and deadlifts in Catt's and he'll be flying nex year.

One fimal point - The M.C was amusing. He was an idiot, "he's really got his momento up now", "what a galliant effort", etc, etc...
