slow_lift_joe | ![]() | Trap/Hex Bar Opinions ? | 22-03-2018 @ 22:46 |
Interesting Member 6186, 245 posts | Hope you are all okay and this thread finds you lifting and mixing it up. With no train stations fisty-cuffs or big foot sighting ? I am thinking of purchasing a Trap/Hex bar due to a slight injury to the back, to give the back a little period of reduction/recovery. Usually I just go lighter for a while, introduce more stretching/flexibility work etc. I have heard mixed reports on a Trap/Hex Bar, you do not go so deep, it can make the return to heavy deadlifting more difficult, other say it does reduce the stress to the back ? I take it something like Watson Gym or Kustom Kit hex/trap bars would be good bars ? Strength Shop ? Jordan ? Pullum Sports ? I would like a good knurl and something that would not break when you look at it. With barbells you know the good brands, Trap/Hex bars appear to be more unbranded and more of a minefield. Not a china cheap steel import. Your opinions on the Trap/Hex Bars to aid in a little recovery to the back and what manufacturer or an industry leader have you used and liked ? Plus some good recommendations on these type bars ?

I've definately found it useful bit of kit. i got mine 2nd hand so not sure of brands etc, but i would check that the bar has the capacity to hold more as i got the one with slighty shorter ends which is a pita because can't really fit enough weight on it.

A cheap set of farmers will do the same lift and be usable for farmers (which are great for recovery a day or so after heavy deadlift.)

Member 2775, 6927 posts | For sure the same issue here in that the ends tend to be too short, getting long ends is what to look for because it will stop that issue plus should be a stronger bar too. As for what I think of the lift, I think its great. It's something I massively overlooked in the past due to people saying it's not a deadlift and it has no carry over. It does have carry over and actually more so than a regular deadlift when it comes to strongman and all the events overall. For the powerlifts it gets you using more leg drive off the floor in deadlifts but it's much closer to a squat and can bring that lift up even better. Safer on the lower back yes but a lot more functional than a lot of people give it credit for too.

![]() ‘downsizing’ Member 5704, 3393 posts SQ 280, BP 210, DL 320810.0 kgs @ 96.3kgs UnEq | Agreed minimise use of them if you PL - you get to place the centre of mass equidistant between knee and hip allowing shorter moment lengths and more contribution from quads so far more weight can be moved. They're great aid for strongman where you've got frame carry, farmers and side handle car deadlifts as events

Interesting Member 6186, 245 posts | Thank you for the helpful replies. I had a good deadlift session yesterday evening with a barbell. Good form and good recovery helped me yesterday. I double checked my form on every lift and I nailed a good session. I think when I do heavy singles or what I consider heavy singles (Most likely light weight compared to many of you) and my day has been long and recovery is not great from a previous work out or driving long hours, I suffer. The deadlift can be brutal without good recovery for me. Trap/Hex/Shrug bar maybe would be good for assistance or as another aid in my weight room. I will put it on hold for the time being due to the price of a good Trap/Hex/Shrug bar from Watson or Kustom Gym, it can go on a wish list for 2019/2020 maybe. Good point on the farmers walk handles, thank you all. ![]()
