I think ive torn (partially or fully) my rotator cuff. My shoulder began to hurt on monday night fairly badly and last night it was unbearable. Today its freed up the slightest bit but im still in a lot of pain

Im at work as we speak and popping painkillers to get me through, should i be looking at going to a walk in doctors tonight (cant get a normal appointment), A&E, or physio? I could really do with some stronger painkillers.

I think i tweaked it at work last weak riving on spanners. Outside work so i assume my shoulder was cold therefore making injury more susceptible.

If it is torn, what should i be doing and how long will it take to recover?

Cheers. Confused

Not much point seeing a GP, Think A and E would arrange a scan but would depend on how serious they believe it to be on how quick it happens. Word of advice if you go and see a physio make sure he knows what the f*uck hes in about, and research. I saw a local one the other day for a torn muscle and when i was on the table being prodded I was making small talk, I asked out of interest what would be the general procedure for a fully torn bicep (as to what to do), I was horrified when he said well you can function fine having physio and letting it heal without surgery?! he said he wouldn't advice getting one re attached due to other possible implications........

Very complicated area to assess as its a very vulnerable joint.

As suggested find a good SPORTS physio in your area as they will have more experience with rotator cuff injuries and get a proper assessment and rehab plan.

Well technically your man is right assuming he is a normal public physio. Obviously it depends on the severity of the bicep rupture (one or both heads rupturing) but for the everyday guy surgery may not be the best option and it may be treated conservatively (possible risk of infection, complications from surgery etc). Obviously athletes involved in sport is another matter

This seems to be a common injury. What's the most common cause?

Yeah i thought as much lol his thoughts scared me non the less. Out of interest i have no idea on how much experience you have on the matter, but what would it take to actually get a fully torn bicep, quad etc repaired if you were advised to leave it by the practitioner? I'm talking from a non-professional athlete point of view? I think everyone on here that has suffered a serious one has got it repaired, im just wondering where or what you would say if the guy you see at A&E say nope go away and let it heal by yourself?

id assume incline bench/dips/squats? things that really open up your shoulder and put it in that prone position

I squat a fair amount, not insane amounts though (back squat twice in 10 days). I bench a small amount, and hardly ever incline bench, same for dips.

Like i say i think i did it at work, and if its not torn then ive made it worse over the following days. Im guna man it out till my days off work come (starting sunday morning) if its still bad then ill get a physio. If its unbearable still before then then ill get into a&e. Obviously ill be resting it.

Its freed up a fair amount throughout the day. Lateral raising, and shoulder rotations fookin kill (pain scale 7-8/10). Front raising brings a small amount of pain (1/10) External rotation hurts more than internal. I hope its not torn, but christ, the pain when its at its worst it eye watering.

Na, go to A+E immediately.
Low bar squats were one of the worst things for me. Will never do them again.
I presume icing it would be a good thing. Have you been doing that?

I squat high bar, and if im totally honest i dont think its had anything to do with it. And im icing it now, but i was up at 5am, working till 6:45 so havent had a lot of time to ice it. What are a&e guna do except waste my time? Can they honestly do anything? (honest question by the way)

If you did it in work then why carry on doing more work that might antagonise it more?
You don't want a lengthy time off lifting or work because of a really bad RC injury
