Thought I'd put this out there again, after the what looked like the resounding success of the u80 BSM,

As we now have u80, u90 and u105, why do we not have any higher weight classes?

I would suggest now more than ever open comps are aimed at those with higher bodyweights, esp in England, 140 axles, 400+ yokes, 350+ frames and 350+ deadlifts are common in open comps

to me someone who weighs 106 is a lot further away from someone who weighs 160 than someone at 79 is from 89?

something Shanejer said in response to me on the u90 thread really made me think

"Not really, most open strongman are just big f**king 160kg guys ..... they cannot have the differnt traits of the smaller lads .. it is litterally who is the biggest and strongest "

that is all very well for WSM, and i love to WATCH it, however, I would far rather compete in a comp that tests the sort of attributes he says an u90 or u105 comp tests

"the traits of each individual (cardio, maximal strength, rep strength, explosive power) are much more noticable in the u90kg class and 105kg class mainly because of the weight choices of the promotors and i think it is fine the way it is and dosen't need to get heavier"

IMO the u90 and u105 comps often look far more exciting than open comps, due to the fact that they are not limited by having to make everything super heavy. There are obviously heavy elements, but other events are used to test speed, explosive power, stamina, things which I think are rarely a consideration in open comps

Somebody who weighs 106 will still do a 105 comp... In fact guys have came down from 120 to do so

But with the 80 catagory and 120 one would seem more logical now than ever

I can't see it happening though

And the cycle would perpertuate...in that I mean, you'd get 128KG guys doing 120 comps in order to be more successful

True JC, but the likes of Hixxy are EXCEPTIONAL

for me its NOT about being successful

I want to a comp more like a u90 or u105 comp

I don't want to do a 430 yoke, I want to do a yoke that is about speed , or I want to do interesting events, which are more than likely missed out in current open comps in favour of something super heavy

Maybe!

I actually have a comp' in mind with a set of events that I think would be really good for 120's... was thinking about it as North West's Strongest Man but maybe a 120kg championship would be better?

I personally would like it as it suits myself perfectly.

However, from the sports point of view, im not sure any more 'filtering down' would be a good idea.

Personally I think Strongman would be better off with different weight classes, rather than adding a 120 in there. 80, 90, and 105 are all a bit too close together. 80, 100, 120, opens would make more sense but that will never happen. I suppose when strongman started it was all just open class. No one would have known that we'd end up with 80s and 90s so the next weight class to be 'born' I assume would've been 105s. Probably made perfect sense at the time.

now I know you are dieting to 120, but IMO that is neither here nor there, why the change of heart on a 120 class?

I agree with the fact that there is a huge gap between a 105kg guy and the top opens guys in terms of weight and weight lifted. There are exceptions of course. Would help the 105's have a stepping stone to get to the opens.

Although now that many of the top open guys are 160kg+ maybe there is a place for it?

comps are getting boring, simple as that.

for example winner from each event on monday was
yoke - 30 seconds
cross carry - 35m
axle dead - 310kg
car deadlift hold - 1 min
stones - 3 reps
4 from 6 implements in the medly

that was the top performance rest of the field:

about 5 no finishes on yoke, 5 over 1 min
about 5 no pick ups on cross, 8 less than 10 metres
only 4 left in after 280 dead
1 no pick up, 12 under 30 seconds in car deadlift
12 no reps on stones, maybe more to do with weather
lots of no reps on medly.

took 5 hours, if i was in the crowd and it had of been a beautiful day id still have been bored s**tless. i was bored s**tless competing in it. the performances may have been hampered by the weather and the standard of athlete over here but it was boring. lots of people came to have a look, not many stayed. family and friends couldnt get away quick enough at the end.
