It seems to me that a lot of sugdenites have absolutely fantastic overhead numbers.

Thing is though, when you go gyms or that people have really low overhead numbers and can't push hee haw. Did it take you folks a long time to build these +100 overheads or were there a few of you who started with excellent overhead?

How much insulina will I have to naturally produce to have a good overhead?

I have strong triceps from bench press, started doing overhead stuff and the numbers are climbing at a decent pace, I'm a natural guy

Took me ages to get over a 100kg and I think I started from a higher point then some. Its definitely one of my favourite lifts but progress is so slow.

Bench went up but overhead didn't really move.

apart from genetics, big factors are what you do before actively training (sedentary v manual job, other sports etc)
to how much initial strength you have. what you train for at start (e.g. bb v strength), and if you are willing to gain weight.
(and of course how much dedication you have from the start.)

if you do some s**tty hi-rep, beyond failure type routines out of a bb magazine while attempting to be 'aesthetic' or similar catabolic crap, it'll take vastly longer than say 'starting strength' on a GOMAD diet.

for me it took me 6 months to push press 100kg at a proper gym, doing sets of 5/3 this was after doing 3 months of general s**tty hi rep crap on machines at a council gym. bodyweight went from about 11.5st to 14stone in that time.

Fantastic replies folks thanks for the input into the lift.

Quite impressed at the 100kg overhead in 6 months thats ace well done. Also a couple of folks mentioning bodyweight. Been gaining weight since I used to do my powerlifting style training so am sitting at 106kg and my lifts do absolutely go up faster nowadays when I actually train them. Been on rehab lifting after starting back from my long long layoff and looking forward to training strength again when I'm able to get a few 20 plates to add to my small collection.

I have had advice from Jay and Marc in the past and it worked really well.
Will be good to get to regular training with those methods!

Thanks for the input Happy

Rarely train overhead with a bar. 100kg with a bit of push. 90 for 2 strict. Bench currently around 145-150.

Must push these harder, shoulders was always my strongest body part.

2 weeks of Dbol and putting on 10lbs got me to a 150kg overhead push press Grin

Got my eye on 170kg by the end of this year. I work with 5x5 building up by 5kg per week and then I test my max after 6 weeks of progression. Seems to work for me.

The trouble is I train alone... hard to get motivated for really big numbers. I just keep plugging on and try to train with as many strongmen "groups" as possible

I pushed pressed 100kg probably within 6 months of starting training, but it was because I was an efficient push presser not in any part due to shoulder strength. Strict pressing it took a lot longer. My overhead doesn't seem to go up alongside my bench. I've got up to benching 190kg and I'm probably at about 100kg strict press now (although I haven't specifically done it in a while).

How some lads on here move such weight is beyond me, far more than the huge squats, benches or deadlifts I see.

190 bench? You should probably be good for 130 plus overhead. If you trained it that is.

If it's any help, i think after a while of basic heavy volume training, a period of frequency style lifting really helps - ie. once you've built some strength/mass, overhead pressing responds particularly well to doing a good attempt most days; i say this because it seems to be one of those lifts that are influenced by absolutely every little thing, so having 1 day a week where you really push it might not work if that day turns out deemed a bad day by the mayan overhead calendar. Better to have 4+ days so you're more likely to catch when the astronomical alignments are right for overhead. Or maybe it's just a grease-the-groove type thing, who knows? Anyway my overhead press liked, in particular, dan john's even easier strength - it got me over 100 strict and 90x10, when my bench was somewhere around 150.

The push press thing for me has always been a big increase. I can do a 90kg push press without too much training but like was mentioned, strict is a different kettle of fish though it's the upper body movement I'd most like to improve.

I'm doing overhead about 3 days a week just now and am gaining a rep every session which I'm very happy about.

10 pounds bodyweight in 2 weeks is absolutely loal!
If I was a rich man I'd probably tren hard, eat clen, insulina back hard and push some serious weight overhead having a dBoal about it afterwards with me mates.

Cheers for all the input folks.
I think I'll attempt a 70kg strict tonight on the axle and let you know how I got on. It's a bit much asking for a 70 right now but sod it!

Yeah that's what I had hoped for. I'd love to put 3 plates above my head any way possible. Might have to get back into it.

I could push press 100kg as a teenager farting around in my parents' garage.

100kg strict came much much later.

Good luck with the 70 strict Wieg. I'll be very interested in the outcome. Love strict press.
