Aren't they just for pain relief?

Pain relief they are can be good, they don't help with recovery though.

I've not read anything solid about TENS helping with recovery, but they have worked very well with pain relief, as stimulation of the Alpha-Beta fibres 'closes' the 'pain gate'. Then again, I suppose reducing the pain could help with recovery, as you could then better mobilise the damaged muscle(s), which is crucial to recovery.

Much of pain and recovery is psychological (and more complex than I fully understand), so if it works for you, just crack on with it... in my opinion.
