Anyone ever used these. I usually like to chuck them in couple weeks leading into a comp for my squat just once tho to feel somwething heavier on my back than im going to squat (never knew the technical term before just referred to them as heavy walk outs). But only like 10-20kg more than im aiming for.

Anyone use them in their warm ups leading up to a PB attempt???

I have read about them but never used them.

I think I got a similar effect one time when I was doing heavy rack pulls above my deadlift 1RM and then moved straight to a deadlift pb attempt.

No, they are f**king pointless.

What is the point of holding a weight you can't lift to 'feel it' when the potential to injure youself showing off in the gym is so high.

if you haven't build sufficient strength to lift a weight then you have no business playing with it!

I remember reading that Jennifer Thompson, probably the best unequipped woman bench presser (she benches 130kg unequipped at 60kg) and an IPF World bench champ, used them in her bench training

Thanks steve, im sure iv heard Dean Bowring uses them on Bench? The suggested percentages are only what you would walk out and lift in competition kitted up to...

It would do if there was no movement, if assistance is used such as kit then using a percentile above what you can lift in that way again is just as stupid.

I was expecting name dropping, always happens as if this is somehow the f**king magical key to why they lift that way, genetics, training, diet, suppliments, drugs etc - f**k all that only macimal holds get you strong.

Plenty of anecdotal stories of old time lifters uing them successfully. Plenty of variants on the same theme used by some good lifters too, Tuitinen (sp?) even does negatives on the deadlift. Last time I checked he wasnt a bad deadlifter but perhaps he is just showing off?

I wasnt hoping to start doing supramaximal holds and become a champ, just interested to see if any people use them successfully as in if anybody had set successive pb's using them before the lift, champ or not.

Yep, I used them pre-comp as well. Nothing fancy - just walking out and setting up with, say, 20-40 kg more than projected final squat; unracking and holding 20kg over attempt 3 for bench; and pulling c. 40kg over attempt 3 DL for a couple of inches and holding for 5 seconds or so. More of a confidence thing than anything else.

Also worth trying in regular training before a submaximal set for reps - e.g. a hold with 140kg on the bench before a set for reps with 120kg. Same principle as Poliquin was discussing with the 1-6 protocol, but without doing an actual single.

I was advised by someone to do these, or at least a variation: pick up the weight and hold for 10 seconds then pick it up for 10 reps, 3 sets of this. I was told it is good for core strength for things like superyoke. I do them about once a month, I will tell you if they have helped or not after the unit 20 comp Grin
