I'm 34 and 10/12ths.

How strong, or fit, or fast can a man get after his "prime" passes by.
I'm here to find out.

Buying my first house. I'm going to be broke. I'll try and invest in weights for home and save that cash.

Going to be a father. I'm going to be tired (and additionally broke). I'm going to have to squeeze in quality time for training - and be better organised.

Doing my open uni degree. I will be about 40 when I finish.
How much can I achieve before my athleticism crumbles under middle age?

Here, I shall document my X-MEN (Omega level) achievements and post a few videos where possible.

All of my training is geared toward being both fit, strong and always ready for combat sports.

Watch this space. Behold my greatness!

One week in Venice fu**ed me up. Sleep, diet and all around energy levels. I didn't think a week of holiday could impact so heavily.

I had my first deadlift session last Wednesday. It has been some time.
I rarely do them anymore because recovery time eats in to kickboxing workouts.

However, I have agreed to train with me gym friend. He has brute force but s**t technique, yet managed a 240 not long back.

On Wednesday, I nearly ripped out my own spine from a bad 220 with a short warm up.

Friday came about and I made it through 60minutes of Thai boxing padwork, at a struggle but I pushed myself all the way.

I'm reverting my diet back to how I was for 10 years. Chicken, rice & green veg. 4 times a day plus brekkers makes me feel great.

I have however, ordered HUEL. Heard of it? I recommend Googling it.
I'm gluten-free and I have finally ordered what I have been waiting for.

I am looking to get down to 120 kilograms. I am not a big fan of processed Meal Replacement sachets, however this is the most convincing nutrient dense meal replacement I have ever seen. I will be cutting about 2-400 calories out of my daily intake. Over several months that should get off the excess weight.

I am just waiting to hear from my solicitor in regards to buying a new house. This is a huge deal because I need to buy my own home gym.

No work out for me now until Tuesday. let the deadlifts commence.

This was my last recorded bench session in October. Of which I have inproved but need to record. Some pointers would be great but I know the angle sucks.

you can get in superb shape , the OU degree will take a lot of your time , but will be worth it

No man! That is my phone, precariously balancing on an old corner ledge, 7ft up in a badly lit gym. It was the best I could do at the time...

That's really good to hear. I don't see any reason to slow anything down physically, only circumstantially, based on time and commitment.

You are doing well man. Hope I'm still doing something good in 9 or so years.

I dead-lifted last Tuesday and about 80 percent of it went really well.
I've started to change my stance up a lot. For whatever reason, I always had a very narrow stance and narrow grip. So I was limited by pure lower back recovery.

Having completed last weeks lifts - I stuck to it consciously about getting wider hips, seating down and pushing through better.
In the second video you can see that I reverted more old style once I did some touch n go. I'll have to keep going until I'm conditioned to wider stance. I have Brian Shaw to thank for my change.

I used 160kg for my stance test

And 140kg for my reps.

Yesterday - I spent a bit more time warming up for my squats than usual.
About 10 minutes of light stretching and shaking out my joints a bit.
Then a bunch of sissy squats, before star jumps.

My heart was pounding, which isn't good for the squat so I loaded only 60kg to start and ensured that every rep counted. Straight back and fully seated. I've always gone AtG but this was a bit more duck footed and upright.

I really got my heat up with more stretches and star jumps between 3 sets of these to warm up.

Decided that I wanted rest rate to be similar to my kickboxing, so I did a minute, stood up and deep nose breathing.

My strength wasn't amazing today but conditioning was good.

3 x 10 reps at 60kg
9 reps at 70kg
8 reps at 80kg
7 reps at 90kg
6 reps at 100kg
5 reps at 110kg
4 reps at 120kg
3 reps at 130kg
2 reps at 140kg
final rep at 150kg.

Might not sound much but my first 6 sets (60,60,60,70,80,90) had only one minute between them. The remaining only had 45 seconds between them.

I was dripping with sweat but EVERY rep counted in as perfect form I could muster.
I put my belt on for 130kg. It was a kick in the ego with the belt but I'm deadlifting again tomorrow.

I finished this with 20 minutes of hard skipping, before going on to heavy calf work on the smith machine.

I felt amazing. Today I'm aching but I've eaten half the planet and I'm back in there tomorrow, hopefully before 3pm.

totally messed up my week last week by not getting some coursework in on time, which crossed over in to my rest day.

Stayed up all night as a natural insomniac does, the day before kickboxing but kickboxing was cancelled so... to the gym, for squats and skipping.

I've really re-set my squat as much as I can, for bare foot squatting.
After watching dozens of olympic squat videos - I really am urged on to get back (or close to) an olympic style. Pure legs and little to no back drive - straight back.

I ended up just doing mad sets.

50kg - 20 reps. All slow to the hole and then power up.
Found myself defaulting in trying to "powerlift squat" with that back forward :/

70kg - 18 reps. Constant tension movement.
Being tired - my blood pressure shot up and thought I was gonna puke.

100kg - 10 reps.
Head pounding. Face pink.

Gym colleague taking the piss because he does 14 sets of 2 at stupid weight Unhappy

100kg - 8 reps.
My legs are sore already and I'm passing out.

I'm only getting 45 second breaks between these.

70kg - 8 reps, 8 further sets.

I was on extinction level event when it was over.

I touched it off with 20 minutes of straight skipping at a moderate pace.

Then calf raised the f**k out of my calves. Yeah boi!!!!!

Hopefully back to deadlifts on Tuesday - seriously missed out this week.
Oh well. Back to my t-bone steak and coffee.

Boy the last 6 months have been disheartening on the fight training.

Full contact interclub show got cancelled end Nov. Then, white collar boxing opponent pulled out on me the same morning as the show end December.

Was offered a K1 bout (my niche) for end Feb (pending a match up) so trained through 8 weeks without a break.

No opponent took it so I was left scratching my arse.

Wife unhappy at non-stop training so took 3 weeks off. Went back Fri evening for padwork. Tried to do some weight training yesterday morning (shoulders and back) but felt as weak as piss.

Recovery is getting harder and if I don't get an opponent by early summer, I'll knock this on the head altogether.
Baby, work, uni and training take everything I have Unhappy

is it 2018 already?

So, I won a fight and I lost a fight.
All of that training, amounted to very little as I started to really wear away my back; through repetitive impact and rotation of kicking. In effect, nearly disabling myself from general everyday activity.

Turns out I have a bit of osteoarthritis and also a couple of other issues in my lower back. Some l4-l5 damage. I now regularly get numbness down my thigh. Not painful like sciatica (which I rarely get any more) but a real stumbling block.

At most, I can do some kicking pad work every now and then and some boxing sparring. So, those days are now over.

What can I do?

Just really decided that last 8 weeks that I have to suck up my ego and return to weight training. I did some, but not a lot as I was Thai boxing and boxing 4/5 days a week on top of my personal life.

So.

After 8 weeks back of trying to squat, I finally managed to last night, almost pain free. Squatting with plates under my heels until I get lifting shoes.

Not much to write home about, but considering I could barely squat my bodyweight until recently, last night doing 100kg for 4 was literally groundbreaking.

Even if I stick with the weights and get relatively strong, I'm unsure if I'd be able to do any strongman for risk of injury. Might just be powerlifting, if anything at all.

Here's to recovery:

Thank you Will. There were on a now defunct Youtube channel. If I find them again then I'll link them in here.

You are still training with the same level of enthusiasm as years ago?
